Can we please enter the justification for each IP on the order page, rather than having to fill out that awkward 5 page word document? It takes forever and is incredibly annoying.

Also, sometimes you need and can justify 1 or 2 ip addresses, but not the whole minimum of 8. This makes it IMPOSSIBLE to get the IP addresses that are needed. An example: Today I had a new reseller sign up, and he needed 2 IP's for his nameservers so he could update them with his registrar. It has now been over 12 hours and I am still getting the run-around from your support staff. Thanks guys, now I've lost a customer.

I only have 3 servers with The Planet, but that is going to change to ZERO if this happens again. You need a better system for doing this and you need it yesterday. Its kind of urgent when customers start to be lost as a result of something so simple being made so ridiculously complex, so I hope you can resolve this mess soon.

I understand your frustrations, however all hosts are required by ARIN to request this information.

Luckily, ARIN expects companies who are requesting IPs to grow. This means you're able to request a "reasonable amount" to account for such growth. For the most part, if you can "immediately demonstrate a need" for at least 25% of the block(2 out of icon_cool.gif and expect future growth, it'll generally pass ARIN's requirements. Now, as ARIN starts tightening the requirements, things might change.

I apologize for the complexity, and I'll spark internal discussions about streamlining this process.

I hope they don't lock it down too much. It's going to be even more difficult.
You cannot just let IP addresses idle so one cannot plan for a customer needing one or two 6 months down the road. It is difficult that's for sure.

It often makes me wonder how DoD manages to get a /13 block (42 decillion) of IP v.6 addresses when it's difficult for little people to get a few. (and they have 12 /8 blocks of IP v.4 (201 million)).

IPv6 are easy to get.

Many of the groups that have the very large blocks have had them for a long time, when it was a lot easier and larger ranges were given. It still is not THAT bad to get IPs right now they just need justification. As Tomy said most places keep a fair number of IPs on hands as IP ordering from ARIN takes time to process.

I remember in the year 1999 or 2000 a lot of hosts switched to name based hosting because we were about to run out of IPs. Now though the big players seem to be able to get enough IPv4 addresses to offer IP based web hosting for all their virtual accounts which people feel is better for SEO and more professional. Not to mention how much more prevalent secure certs are now than then which also require IPs. Don't really have a point... just interesting how time flows and some things change and some things stay the same.

General Electric has one of the largest IP allocations in the world and they don't use it. If they would give up some of their IP space, things wouldn't be like this.

I've never had to fill out a justification form. Last time I requested IPs was about 4 months ago, and I got them within an hour?

To be honest Orbit 2 sucks so bad that I haven't even bothered to see what is involved in requesting IPs through it.

As IPV4 space starts running out, ARIN is becoming more restrictive and requiring more documentation from us. Luckily, ARIN still isn't as strict as RIPE.

What about Orbit2 do you not like? Any specifics that I can pass along?
