Full Version: Should I buy a New Server

Here's my current situation:
-Server 1 is Intel® Pentium® 4 CPU 2.60GHz with 1G ram
-Server 2 is Intel® Celeron™ CPU 1300MHz with 512M ram
-Server 3 is Intel® Celeron™ CPU 1300MHz with 1G ram

So I pay a total of 357$ per month for my 3 old servers.

What I want to do is replace my 3 servers by 1, I have no real purpose to have 3 separate servers.

What I'd like to know is if the new server power will be good enough (powerful enough). Here's what I was thinking:
Conroe 3060 Series - SAS
Intel Xeon 3060 Dual Core Conroe Processor
146GB, 10K RPM SCSI/SAS Hard Drive
2048 MB RAM (I would upgrade to 4G RAM)

Would you go with such an upgrade? 1 server instead of 3 servers?
Will the harddrive speed increase and extra ram and a dual core cpu compensate?

Definitely. Those old Celerons with their 5200RPM PATA drives (and most likely the P4/2.6, as well) won't run as well in parallel as a single 3060 with SCSI, let alone 10K SCSI.

Although, if you're gonna go that route of consolidating down to one, you might look at something with dual SCSI drives to help redundancy. But then again, performance-wise, you'd probably see an increase with one of the Dual-Xeon 2.8/Dual-SCSI's for cheap, considering the age that's on the systems you've got.

How many sites are there?

I have about 3 sites that are getting large amounts of traffic.

Considering your 3 low-level servers, I would go with new server assuming you have enough bandwidth to accommodate your web-traffic.

I agree... just be careful with spreading of bandwidth.
