Are there any photographs of the H2 datacenter? Just curious where my newest server is located smile.gif
Kevin Hazard
The Data Centric blog's pictures are all from H2: http://blog.theplanet.com/2007/08/07/data-centric/
Jeff
Awesome - thanks! When I saw those for some reason I thought those were H1 ...

No problem at all. We're actually thinking about going through and getting pictures from inside each DC ... there won't be a lot of differences (as you're looking at servers with wires plugged into 'em), but it seems like we can never go wrong with more server shots.

Least there are no photo's of you checking the dipstick of a server (read story in link)

LOL - nice Starpoint.

I guess I'm an old-school geek now -- cloud everything doesn't do much for me yet -- I still like looking at cable runs, routers, and circuit boards. I even like the smell of a new computer the first time you assemble and power it on...

Hmmm now there is an idea... with all the geeks/nerds/wonks etc.. in the world, imagine an air freshener that smells of of new datacenter.

On the more serious side, my cousin's company is getting ready to move their DC to the one in Conroe thats located in that hardened underground fallout bunker and I got tagged for "outside help" (I am one of the poor souls that got caught up in the HP layoffs) so I will soon be doing some contract work

However, for those who love the new server bling, check out this new offering from HP (well its been out a few months and I have had my hands on them.... I drooled )

HP 785

Note that this unit is a blade CELL unit, each Cell only contains 1 CPU (quad core up to 2.88 ghz each core) and 8 sticks of 8 gig ISS memory, all Disk is on the chassis.... and its a 7 U chassis. 1 unit fully pimped running ESX or some VMware linked to a SANS (figure 1/2 cab of kit) and you have your entire server farm.

What color wire is used to connect the flux capacitor to the standard time/space deviation control unit?
ajz4221
I want to know where they get the lime green cat5 cables.
Red used to mean "don't touch" but I guess people ignore that now...
Need something more noticable; like lime green!

Been there, its a lot warmer than youd expect a DC to be

We use type IIA strings. Unfortunately, we're unable to determine the color of these.

Yeah... The ambient DC temperature can be deceiving... It's all about getting the right temperature in the right places and not going out of control. If you get a chance to walk through D6 Phase3, it's a bit cooler (since no warm air is exhausted into the room).

You can custom order the neon colors. When I I worked in the welding industry, we had neon pink welding leads (cables) as rental cables. we NEVER EVER had them stolen icon_smile.gif

What is good about doing the cable rainbow is you can ID what the cable is for.

Usually a RED cable is a cross over. which is why when you go to a computer store that sells in bulk, you do not see RED in bulk boxes all that much, you can order it, but they usually have the red cross overs all made up and packaged

Can i reserve a D6 trip?

I still want to visit D3 as well, given its significance for the D DC's

Also H1 would be an interesting one considering last year

You'll have to be able to find us first. We've gone into hiding. "Dallas" and "Houston" are just pseudonyms now.

Kevin, finding the houston DC's are are not hard. Ya want me to post the lattitudes and longitudes? (grin) Houston is my home town and finding places is easy for me

And with that post, no one ever heard from Starpoint again. happy.gif

If they wanted them hidden, they wouldn't put this HUGE blue logo that just happens to say "THE PLANET" on the buildings (but I don't know how many of their DC's actually do have this).

Thilly guy....I am mobile... the data centers are not.

I knew where the DC2 in Houston was being built before Robert Marsh told anyone simply because they posted photos of the construction.

Having lived in Houston all my life, and driven over most all areas of this town, I think before you could make me dis-appear you would have to find me. That would prove difficult seeings how you do not know what I look like.

Besides, anyone who knows how to research on the net can get the locations of the DC's then google map them.

True. Just having some fun.

For security reasons, our data center buildings aren't marked with the big logo and we don't share the addresses. They probably wouldn't be too tough to track down externally, but it's still just a small step in keeping everything a little safer.

Having seen both DC's in Houston (and their building downtown) the only one that has any logo on it is the one downtown.

However, any datacenter will have some tell tale signs / clues that indicate its a data center....

Now what those clues / signs are, I am not telling.

So, what is the building on I-35 in Dallas with the noticeable logo?
Just offices or secretly DLLSTX3 (like you'll tell me...)? tongue.gif

That facility housed The Planet's corporate offices before the merger and still has a lot of my coworkers.

Ah. So that's more like the new Houston office with just a small server room for local building needs.
DLLSTX3 is an independant location?

or you just look for a crater with a sign next to it... "step down transformer was here"

icon_mrgreen.gif

too soon? =X

There is no crater, and for those old timer customers.... remember the 1st fire at DC1 in Houston? Both times it was repaired etc... and no evidence of the issue was left.

Here is the ONLY hint.... Both the DC's in Houston are close to if not on top of the 3rd or 4th largest fibre optic network in the country.

I was in Houston a couple weeks ago...I accidentally booked my ticket to fly into Hobby instead of IAH, but oh well..

I do remember driving north on the 405 I believe and seeing the big blue planet building off to the right!

I-45, yep. That's our HQ.

When we open an office in San Diego, we'll be sure to have it off of the 405. icon_smile.gif
thedude
Ahh right sorry!

I was in San Diego right after Houston, so I had the 405 on my brain...
Martyn Dale
If you are going to put it on the 405 put it a bit more north in say errr, the irvine area =D

Then ill just be a few minutes away *cackle*
Jeff
I want a Planet datacenter in Chicago icon_smile.gif
