Is it possible to use one of the additional IP addresses as a PRIMARY ip address ??

Example :

server hostname12821(70.85.141.122) uses gateway 70.85.141.121 and original IPs available are 70.85.141.122-70.85.141.126

we have recently ordered an additional IP set for this server, 70.84.183.104-70.84.183.111\\255.255.255.0.

How do we switch PRIMARY IP to one from the additional set ???? we will have to cancel at least 5 servers if this can not be done, can an experienced theplanet tech please take a look at ticket 5491694PLNT.

Change the ordering in the configs

/etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/

The files will be ifcfg-eth0 (or maybe ifcfg-eth0-range0)

Duplicate range0 to range1 for your new range.

If you move range0 to range1 and put a new range0 it'll alter which range is your 'default' etc too.

that will not help, problem seems to be with the gateway for new IP set ... Someone at theplanet, PLEASE HELP !!

Surely the primary of the server can be anything, s'long as the routing / gateway is set up so the server can send back out correctly?

Ticket 5491694PLNT

Hardware Object: 174.133.220.178 , 174.132.60.202, 70.86.149.18, 70.85.141.122
We have recently ordered additional IP addresses for servers noted above.

We have received addresses without gateway IPs - we need gateway IP for each IP set so we can use them as primary addresses on our VMWare servers.

IP sets received :
174.133.12.104- 174.133.12.111 // 255.255.255.0
67.19.121.88-67.19.121.95\\255.255.255.0
70.86.40.144-70.86.40.151\\255.255.255.248
70.84.183.104-70.84.183.111\\255.255.255.0

Please provide gateway IP address for each IP set.

Dear Customer,

The additional IP ranges should be able to use the gateway IP addresses of the first range of IPs that came with your dedicated server. All of these are additional IP ranges, so you need to use the gateway already defined on the dedicated server. Make sure all netmasks are set to 255.255.255.0.

That will not work!

Example: server hostname12821(70.85.141.122) uses default gateway 70.85.141.121 and was issued additional IP set 70.84.183.104-70.84.183.111\\255.255.255.0.

Server hostname12821(70.85.141.122) runs a VMWare windows server 2003 and we want to set a primary IP 70.84.183.104. In order to do so, we need a gateway in 70.84.183.* IP range if we must use subnet 255.255.255.0!

Dear Djordje Savic,

Could you provide the administrator password? This is not normally supported, but I need to make sure this is not an issue with the IP range.

Please update ticket !

Jason M. - Monday February 9th, 2009; 9:08 AM CST
Dear Djordie,

The gateway will remain the same as the original server IP. This is likely the way that VMware wants to have subnet for the gateway in the same range as the IP address. If you can add the IP address to the server itself and it pings then there is no issue with the networking setup but limit of VMware.

You will need to either assign it one of the addresses setup in the original server block. We do not provide support for setting up VMWare on our servers so I cannot provide you with much assistance on this issue.

Dear Jason

Did you read this ticket thread at all??

Is it possible to use one of the additional IPs as a PRIMARY server IP??

We do not wish to use the original IP set provided when we ordered server, we wish to use an IP from the set we ordered yesterday! Is this possible??

Dear Djordje Savic;

The complete subnet information for the IP blocks assigned to this server are as follows:

Network IP 70.85.141.120
Broadcast IP 70.85.141.127
Netbits 29
Netmask 255.255.255.248

Network IP 70.84.183.104
Broadcast IP 70.84.183.111
Netbits 29
Netmask 255.255.255.248

It is possible to change the server's primary IP address, however, The Planet discourages changing it. If you do change it, please inform us so we can update our records.

Thank you for choosing The Planet. Please let us know if you require further assistance.

We're going around in circles, did you read this entire ticket thread ?!?

If it's possible, please do it on the server below :

hostname12821(70.85.141.122)

IP set received for this server :

70.84.183.104-70.84.183.111\\255.255.255.0

Please set a PRIMARY IP 70.84.183.104 !

Michael W. - Tuesday February 10th, 2009; 1:50 AM CST
Dear Djordje Savic:

Your IP Addresses are assigned in a block, so the first two IP Addresses and the last one cannot be used as a public IP.

IP '70.84.183.104' is the Network IP and cannot be used at all. IP '70.84.183.105' is the Gateway IP for this block. The last IP '70.84.183.111' is the Broadcast IP and cannot be used just like the Network IP. If you bind the first or last IP Address, it could cause routing issues and cause the whole block not to work properly.

Below are the only IP Addresses you should bind to your NIC:
(WAN IP)
70.84.183.106
70.84.183.107
70.84.183.108
70.84.183.109
70.84.183.110

Please try and use one of the following IP Addresses above along with the provided gateway. If you have any further questions or concerns, please let us know.

Thank you for choosing The Planet.

Mike W

I would have indeed said the Gateway will stay the same, regardless of the range of the other IP addresses. VMWare should be able to cope with an IP being one thing and the gateway / mask being something else.

My networking might not be CCNP or whatnot level, but i know enough icon_smile.gif

The additional subnets are configured as classless, meaning they have no gateways. All of the default routes for those subnets will be the same as the primary.

You can submit an NSR(Non Standard Request) review ticket to explore the option of manually setting the configuration on the routers, however I advise against this since you may see a lot of outages when our systems push updated configs to the routers. Also, keep in mind that each subnet will be reduced by 3 if you want gateways for each.

5491694PLNT has been updated with the above information.

I believe there was another customer that had this same issue. But he mentioned VMware cant cope. You may want to double check that, since I am basing it completely on what the other customer said.
