Full Version: DOS attacks on servers near us bring our servers down

We have over 20 dedicated servers with The Planet and are generally happy with the service.

However, recently we've experienced frequent losses of connectivity to our servers because of DOS attacks on servers that are not ours, but that are connected to the same switch as ours.

Each time this happens, we have to open a ticket, the techs take about 15 minutes analyzing OUR server (which never turns up anything b/c we're not the ones being targeted), then another 15 minutes go by while they identify the targeted server, and then about 5 min later they finally fix it. This is becoming a more and more frequent issue, and the result is that our servers are down for 30+ minutes at a time due to DOS attacks on SERVERS THAT ARE NOT OURS.

Needless to say, this is extremely frustrating, especially since there seems to be nothing we can do. What makes it doubly-frustrating is that when we opened a ticket to discuss what could be done to prevent this (e.g. The Planet putting it redundant switches, or preventing a single server from being able to overload a switch), they respond with generic information about how to prevent DOS attacks.

Does anyone from The Planet care to comment about what can be done about this?

Thanks,
Alex

Well im not part of the planet, but if you got a private rack (if they do them still) you would not have that issue as your uplink would probably be on a higher levell distribution switch rather then an access switch but im not entirely sure of there network layout. Just something to look into though.

Must be pulling through the same source for the nearby racks. sucks for you...
