Full Version: Dual Xeon 3.2 SCSI - upgrade path?

Hi all,

I'm on a Dual Xeon 3.2Ghz w/ 2GB Ram and dual 73GB SCSI drives (not raided).

RHEL, Ensim.

Assuming equal RAM, how does this compare against say a Xeon 3060 2.4 GHz Dual Core Processor SAS? Or Xeon 3210 2.1 GHz Quad Core Processor SAS (which is on The Planet's "Virtual Rack")?

Any other upgrade path suggestions that won't break the bank?

Thanks!

The Quad core is going to provide the best performance as it not only offers the most CPU power, but the rest of the hardware is also newer and faster. Coupled with SAS drives you should see a noticable improvement in performance over your existing server. I would look at having more RAM though - if your server load warrants an SAS & quad core system then 4Gb RAM would be a better option. What sort of sites are you hosting?

I would agree, go with the Quad core... you will notice a nice improvement.

I'm not really hosting many sites that get too much attention. Couple sites w/ 250K hits per month and everything else doesn't even add up to 100K hits/month.

I think most of my resources are used on MailScanner/clamav/spamassassin.

It's not terrible on the Xeon dual 3.2, but intensive php/mysql sites don't respond 'like they used to' if you know what I mean.

Combine this wit the fact that I'm a couple 10.x revs behind on Ensim, and it had me thinking about possibly upgrading.

Any thoughts on the dual 3.2 Xeon's vs. that dual core listed? (Basically looking at The Planet's latest sales promotion emailer.) Pretty much a wash when you compare the two or ... (Analyzing the cost to benefit ratio.)

Thanks again!

I would suspect a modern dualcore (depending on which one) would likely still show signs of improvement over an old dual xeon... We sell Dualcore 3060's soooo often these days with no complaints, lovely little servers they are.

No idea on ThePlanet pricing these days on different specs, but you may also opt for 4GB of ram... makes a nice difference over 2GB on Ensim servers with lots of php and mysql activity.

Cool - thanks for the replies, guys!

No matter which route I go, I'll definitely upgrade to 4GB RAM.

Thanks again!
