It would be nice to add a version of this logo as a png with transparency for use by affiliates with dark, colored, or other backgrounds.

I agree -- I actually thought we had fixed this, but it won't work with a .jpg at all, so obviously not. We're on it.
(Inside joke to jeff: Thankfully my forum notices are going to the right place again.

Keep in mind that any version of Internet Explorer before 6 doesn't know how to handle PNG transparency so it fills it in with a light gray, and that's a terrible thing.
Just FYI...

I seem not to get many IE5 visitors at all any more, so if 6 does handle transparency ok, I can live with that.

Just puttin' it out there.

I appreciate it -- I honestly haven't used transparent png much at all so I went looking at my stats after your post to see if IE 5 or 5.5 was still visiting my site. Thankfully, well less than 1% which I can live with. A transparent GIF would probably work fine too... or maybe it wouldn't be an issue if we filled the background of the jpeg ourselves, but I thought I might as well ask for the off-white crowd! Overall I like the look of the non-square Planet powered-by badge a lot -- sleek, classy, fits the logo, and a bit unique.

Strange info there. The PNGs I create in PhotoShop utilizing clear backgrounds show up with the gray thing (I use IE6). This especially happens is I have a shadow effect or something to the sort on the primary layer in the psd file.

I just ran into this myself a few weeks ago. I believe that if you save as a PNG-8 (rather than a PNG-24), it should work in IE6.
Good luck!

Just wanted to post a quick note, that any transparent graphics we post in ShareASale will be GIFs for compatibility.
Some interesting reads on the IE 5/6 issue can be found in these results if anyone is curious:
http://www.google.com/search?q=transparent+png+in+ie .... seems you can use some tricks to get around it if you wanted/needed to use PNGs, but it looks like it takes some work.

Thanks XGhozt!
Question though: do we need to load the affiliate image from the www.shareasale.com site, or can we load a transparent image or even simply a jpeg with different background from our own domain and simply link the image to the shareasale affiliate URL?

I'm not quite clear on the Shareasale rules in this regard. Rick?

I can double-check with them, but it's normally an issue with the Merchant (us) more than the Network -- as with the promo's we can run, and the image is loaded directly from us instead of ShareASale.
That said...XGhozt, if you don't mind, I can post that PNG in ShareASale for anyone to use without having to modify any URLs.
(And looks like I forgot to get the GIFs up as well -- I'll upload those at the same time.)
