For the mysql problem comment out this line in the my.cnf:
basedir=/var/lib
must look like this:
#basedir=/var/lib
About the "Segmentation fault" i think is a openssh bug, update the openssh and try again.
Good luck

Unable to FTP/SSH/WHM/CPanal into server after reboot.
WHM comes up with blank screen and SSH closes connection before it ask for username. Mysql is down and unable to restart it.
Problem is that if the server is rebooted again I can access everything and restart mysql thru WHM and the server runs for a few hours and then crashes again.

After 2 weeks of this mess I've decided to start looking into finding another Host!

Check the 'history' command (if it works), if so, then please blank out any passwords, and post it.

try:
ldd `which mc`
if its glibc, it will end on one of the lib files in that package.
