The root servers I need to connect to already use IPv6, which is why I need to be able to connect to them with the same protocol.
Yes, they are better for mobile applications. Japan is IPv6, which allows them to video conference on their cell phones.
Under the current system, IPv4 provides 4 billion IP addresses. Not enough to go around. IPv6 has 340 trillion trillion trillion IP addresses. Basically enough IP addresses that if you fit all 4 billion current IP addresses on a blackberry, it would take a container the size of the world to hold all the blackberries with 4 billion IPs each.
U guys know how old ip addresses look: 192.192.192.192
IPv6 looks like this: 2001:0db8:1824:3325:7798:4585:1428:57ab
I'm a startup company and will be implementing IPv6 out of the gate, with IPv4 compatibility for the time being.
There are colo's that are already IPv6 compliant, I'd just like to stick with ThePlanet, where I'm already a customer.
Is anyone using IPv6 at theplanet?
I love some of the stuff that goes around about v6 that is basically untrue :-)
Anyway, as to the question, I believe if you ask them nicely they have a beta trial going at the moment, altho, I believe only some data centers are setup to route it. You can also use 6to4 which I've been using for the past three years or so via theplanet with only minimal problems (usually people pasting v6 records for their hosts but not actually enabling services to run over v6 <g>)
The more people asking for it the more likely they are to speed the process up, so harass your theplanet sales/helpdesk types asking for it and it'll happen.
