Full Version: cannot recieve email from certian smtp servers

We have this problem where we cannot recieve email from some of our vendors smtp servers.

We run exim as out MTA, and for the most part, we can send/recieve email just fine.

Example, our voicemail vendor send alerts to our email address when we get a new voicemail.

These email never get to us. There is no entries in the /var/log/exim_mainlog or rejectlog for the
vendors domain that show anything was accepted or rejected.

However, the same vendors support staff can email us just fine, however thier email goes through a different
outbound smtp server, both have the same gotvmail.com top level domain.

We have the same problem with other vendors, where thier sales or support staff can email us, but we never get any
email from thier automated systems.

I also have an email account with for a company I work for that uses cebyond as thier hosting provider
and cannot recieve email from that account either. The email from this account does not bounce immediatly, instead is comes back after a few days as undeliverable with no reason other than "delivery timed out", so I cannot glean anything useful from that except thier servers cannot deliver it "for some reason".

I also tried stoping the iptables service to make sure there is not some firewall rule intefering with delivery, and that didnt help either.

The problem seems to be related to ALL our domains on our server, not just one. We run our own dns and email on the same server. For instance, I cannot recieve email from my Cbeyond email account to sales@pimsleuraudio.com or kelly@serveweb.com, two of our domains.

This is not making much sense to me. Either it is some obscure DNS or routing problem, or they just cannot connect to the port for some reason, while others can.

Any help or ideas greatly apprechiated!!

Thanks,
Kelly

Have you tried a traceroute to the mailservers that are failing? That may give you an idea of where to look for a solution. The actual domain name does not matter because it is never hitting your exim_log which means it is not any sort of RBL. With that undeliverable message it sounds more like a network or firewall problem.

Tracerout from our smtp server works to two of several problem smtp servers: mx.cbeyond.com and rssmtp1.gotvmail.com , both of which cannot seem to send me email. I can even telnet into mx.cbeyond.com and send mail to my cbeyond account.

The gotvmail.com is Sendmail 8.12.11.20060308/8.12.11 (straight from the smtp banner), the mx.cbeyond.com only identifies itself as 220 mail.east.cbeyond.com ESMTP.

I'm wondering of the possibility of problems between my Exim 4.6.9 MTA and the others, maybe something like my server isnt responding fast enough, etc.

Have one of their technicians telnet directly from the mail server to your mail server, and try manually delivering a message.
