You posted this in the Domain Registration forum, so the only lesson I would say is that if a domain is important to you, don't wait until the day before it expires to renew it. Use auto-renew to renew at least 30 days before it expires to give yourself room for error if whatever issue arises. And unless impossible, fund your reseller account to cover 30 days of future transactions at all times.

(yes, kind of giving myself a pat on the back here because I did, so even while R1 had a momentary glitch I was not affected by any panic over domains not being renewed.)
