Mel
Hi,

Given that the operating systems would be the same
the HD would be the same 250GB SATA
1GB or 2GB Ram (undecided yet) your thoughts please

Which is the better or more powerful processor out of the 2
I will be running static pages and databases not 100's of databases
but would expect over a period of time 10 as they become established
to be used regularly on a daily basis with a fair amount of traffic to each one

Conroe 3040 Dual Core 1.86GHz

or

Intel Pentium 3.0Ghz P4

Any comments or thoughts would be much appreciated

Thanks Mel
Jeff
I believe the Conroe has larger CPU cache and a faster FSB which makes a difference.

The P4 3.0 has hyperthreading which is some percent effective, but not 100% like a dual core.

I would personally go for the newer conroe 3040.

I've had both and I'm currently using the Conroe. The Conroe is better than the P4 due to a number of factors.

I have also had the P4 and a Conroe 3040.
I think you do see an improvement of speed from the FSB. 800mhz vs 1066mhz.

I just got a server with a Kentsfield in it. WOW big difference from the Conroe 3040.
4 cores with 4GB of ram is sweet. biggrin.gif

I had a p4 in H1, during the downtime I bought the 3040 in dallas, massive difference. No more waiting a couple seconds for heavy sql queries, they be done in a fraction of a second now! After seeing such a big difference, I bought another conroe 3040 in H2 with a 100mb port, don't know if that makes a difference but I'm sure during heavier traffic times there won't be any slowdown transfer wise? But yeah, as for power hands down, way better than the p4.

I was quite tempted to get a quad core, but cheaper to get two mediocre servers as opposed to one good one. Plus its time to have a backup server.

If you spend $20 than a standard Conroe 3040 (1GB 10mb port) you can get the Conroe 3060 has 2GB of ram and a 100mb port.
The 100mb port may help when a lot of people are trying to download something at the same time.

As an example i'll use two of my boxes.
one is a p4 2.4 with 1.5gb of mem
two is a Conroe with 2gb of mem

The second server woops the first.
