Looking to up grade my server from a single core p4 2.4 ghz with a gig of ram to either the special Intel Dual Xeon 2.8GHz Processor promo or a conroe 3040 series 1.8 dual core .
Aside from the extra memory which I would go with 2 on the conroe and the port speed which I would up grade to 100 mbit on the conroe. What would be the better server.
It would be a light duty server mainly as a hobby a few racing games , a very small static web site and a live streaming stats program.
Right now the P4 2.4 runs everything just fine , band width usage is not a concern becuse even on the hardest usage days its only about 11 gigs and projected usage for the month is 100 gigs.
The dual 2.8 with windows 2003 would run me about 162 and would give me 2 gig of ram and a 100 mbit port . to bring the conroe up to that I would have to catch the double down deal on and add $10 for the port. so it would be around $159.00 of course the conroe has more drive space
that is of course if the dual 2.8 promo holds on untill the 22nd

In my view if you're considering a server with 7200 rpm drives and need decent cpu power but not much disk io, the conroe is the better deal - faster system bus, newer cpu architecture, greater l2 cache on cpu, newer components.
The beauty of the dual xeon deal in my view is that for $10 more you can get a server with twin 10k rpm scsi drives which handle higher io load tasks much better than the 7200 rpm sata drive(s), and to upgrade the conroe to a dual 10k drive costs a lot more.

The promotion is not due to end until April 30, but we've already had to remove the Dual Xeon 3.2 with SATA drives as an option because we sold out of that server due to the popularity of the promotion, so there are no guarantees that server will still be available on the 22nd.
I personally think that the Dual Xeons are excellent servers, especially for someone looking for an economical solution that includes two SCSI hard drives, or for someone who needs a configuration that has two processors, but cannot afford a dual processor multi-core solution. At the same time, in your case, upgrading from technology that is 6 years old to technology that is 4 or 5 years old doesn't make as much sense when you can upgrade to latest generation technology that is only 1 or 2 years old if you don't have a specific reason to choose the Dual Xeon.
Either way, I'll be happy to give you quotes for each in a ticket in your account. When you're ready to order you'll just need to update the ticket to say, "I approve" and indicate which server you want. In the meantime, if you have any other questions please feel free to contact me directly.
