Full Version: Mask whois data?
The Planet Forums > System Administration > DNS Hosting > Domain Registration

Hi,

I am a long time The Planet customer dedicated server customer (4 years) and I have several domains registered here.

Several registrars offer the ability to hide the public "whois" info. I would like to do this, as I am tired of being contacted by spammers and scammers via the public "whois" info.

Does The Planet offer anything like this?

If not, could it be added, I don't want to have to transfer my domains.
markcausa
This is usually referred to as Private Registration and offered by most registrars.

If The Planet does not offer it, you may want to setup a special email account on the WHOIS, like "domain_admin@yoursite.com" with an autoresponder and heavy spam filter settings. If you're getting junk mail, you may consider getting a P.O. box or "street address box" from the UPS Store.

Thank you for your reply.

However before I go to the expense of a PO box and trouble of setting up a separate email account for each domain I would just rather transfer my domains to a registrar that offers the private registration.

Maybe someone from the Planet can give me a definite answer if private registration is a part of their plans before I transfer the domains.

I know ResellOne (owned by The Planet) offeres private registration, so chances are you will be able to do it.
Jeff
They do? I know openSRS does, but I don't think it's available in our resellone control panel yet, is it ??? (am I not seeing something that is right in front of my face?)

You wouldn't necessarily have to setup a separate email for each domain -- you could simply setup one like dns-admin@yourdomain.com or domain-privacy-admin@your-housting-domain.com

Even if you setup a separate post office box, it might still be cheaper than paying for private registration at a more expensive registrar, depending on the number of domains you have.
markcausa
Yeah, I see it on the main page.

And thank you for clearing up the confusion with what I was trying to say there.

Where exactly is it located?

Interesting. Thanks Mark!

(I queried an existing RS1-registered domain by entering it under "Domain Management" "View Domain" and that option doesn't exist there.)

Is there a way to enable domain privacy for already registered domains?

Is it free, or is there a charge for it?
Jeff
Just entered an existing resellone domain under View Domain at the top and hit Query and I don't have whois privacy on the following page like in your screenshot either -- maybe you're getting an early preview of a feature that others of us will get shortly?

The reason I was looking for a private registration was to avoid spam email and spam postal mail. I can see how setting up another email address you could filter out the spam email. I fail to see how setting up a PO box would eliminate spam postal mail unless you just had all the mail tossed from the PO box. I guess that would be an option.

But what about the legitimate mail and email from the real registrar? Such as renewal notices? Wouldn't I miss those if I set up a dummy PO box and a dummy email?
markcausa
Well, we weren't really talking about setting up dummy information - More like creating new accounts to separate this stuff from your personal email and mail in-boxes.

Same here -- I see the whois privacy option now but it doesn't actually work yet. I wonder if it's something that R1 has to enable, or if it's a tucows open srs/hrs feature that's not fully done yet?
