Full Version: Is theplanet.com going to offer Urchin 6?

I notice that Urchin 6 (now by Google) is currently in Beta mode and the final product will be released soon.

Is theplanet.com going to offer it to existing (or new) customers?

It's about time we were able to offer our hosting clients a decent option that compares well with Google Analytics (which is basically Urchin 6 hosted by Google).

Thanks.

Man, I sure hope so. I can't wait to start offering Urchin to my clients!

Urchin 6 is not something I'm working on at this very moment, but I also saw that it is now available. We're always evaluating these new software options in due course... but hey, if enough people start asking we can prioritize it higher.

My customers have all been asking for Google Analytics for the past few months. I am moving away from Urchin. I am sorry if I this is obvious, but is there anything that Urchin can do that Google Analytics can't?

I don't want to start a war; I'm just wondering.

Thanks,
Alden

Well the big reason I am looking at Urchin over Google analytics is the extra feeling of privacy afforded with having control over the equipment that my data is housed on, then again I am working from a University and require a higher level of security than many others. There are a few features offered in Urchin 6 not offered through G/A and I can see good reason to use both at the same time.

Fundamentally I like the idea of processing the logs in the background server-side vs. forcing all visitors to load an extra plugin. I don't know if saving a couple milliseconds of load time is relevant at all any more due to not requiring an extra call to an external google analytics server with each page load.

But I can see the advantage to analytics too -- no need to run stats server-side and pay for the cpu, or for that matter, to even do much logging with the web server freeing up some cpu cycles. And like webmail, it's hard to beat the continuous upgrades and resources google gives their hosted apps.

Google has a pretty good comparison of Urchin and G/A here

Ah, thank you for the link.

Count me as another vote for Urchin 6. Urchin 5 wasn't available for RHEL 5 when I got the server.

Count me in for another 3 votes (I have 3 servers) for Urchin 6. It will cost me $3000 to upgrade to Urchin 6 if TP doesn't upgrade. It would nice to get a statement of direction in this area.

That would be nice. Running urchin 5 on my RHEL 4 boxes, would love to upgrade to version 6!
datona
Count me in also. Would love to see TP bring that onboard

I'd also be quite interested. Wouldn't even think twice about it if the fee wasn't too astronomical. I've used Urchin 5 for years. It's good, but doesn't do some of the things Google Analytics does. And Google Analytics doesn't do some things Urchin 6 does.

I'm all for TP working out something with Google re: the new Urchin.

I would also like to see Urchin 6 as the v5 is not compatible with Redhat/CentOS 5 (at least when ordering new server)
