Hello,

I am going to buy a dedicated server and have 2 questions:

1. Will I be able install Win2008 on it by myself (since there are no option with pre-installed Win2008)?
I'll have to do it with KVM over IP, right?

2. Will you provide me with 1 day KVM over IP for free or should I pay $30/month even if the rest 29 days it wasn't be used by me?

I was just told that Windows '08 is now available for pre-install, so take a look at the cart. smile.gif

Unless there's a setup fee on KVM (I don't think there currently is) they might be able to prorate it down to the time you need. Otherwise, you would probably need to hold on to it for a month, then cancel the kvm service.

I'd like to see an official reply on #2 though, for future reference.

Anyway, in closing, you should now be able to order Windows '08 pre-installed, avoiding the need for kvm in the first place. smile.gif

That's right Mark, thanks!

There is currently no setup fee on our KVM (it's normally $100) but our terms on the KVM, like those of our servers, are month to month. So you'd have to pay for the full 30 days.

Is it even possible to install a full OS over the KVM?
I think I heard it has a virtual cd rom but thought it was limited to around 400MB.

It would be cool if it had the ability to mount ISO's (like VMware servers) and then you could install an OS from another server in the same data center (because it would be much faster than installing it remote plus less chance of data failure).

The current way we set them up results in the image being wiped out when the server is rebooted.

So the image would have to be re-mounted after each reboot. For a Windows install, it would have to be re-mounted once after the inital format and file copy.
For Server 2008, the whole install runs from the first boot so you wouldn't have to re-mount the image.

I am assuming this is what you were meaning (and not the image being wiped off the physical HDD).

Yeah, the iso image through media emulation.

Ok here is a good question. If you all ready have a dedicated server you want to keep.
Will The Planet support you installing Windows Server 2008?

Other question.
Will The Planet install Windows Server 2008 for you? (Upgrade from Windows 2003)
markcausa
They will do it under the category of an OS Install. This process will wipe your entire drive(s) though, so you should make full backups before ordering one.

There is a question that concerns me:

we are to try Server 2008, but unsure if there is adequate support for the Server 2008 and if we will be able to install POP3 without problems.

Our support teams went through a full training cycle on Windows 2008 prior to this launch. Email services played a big part in that. Our normal support boundaries are still in effect, but we're here to help if we can.

To the people asking about installing OS's over KVM over IP. I've had about 5 customers order KVM's and install debian remotely by mounting the image over the KVM.
