I have a customer who is requesting that I provide him with the ability to restore single emails to any users' mailbox. He wants 60 days of mail stored and available for him to restore at any given time. He is also requesting a simple web interface for doing so. Originally I was considering enabling MailScanner and installing mailwatch for this, but I really don't want to put the load on this server as it is already worked pretty hard. I have a separate server that does all mail scanning and that server is already running MailScanner/mailwatch.

My question is does anyone know of a backup solution that will allow this? I've looked into r1soft.com and a few others but they seem to be file level backup, so I would have to restore an entire mailbox instead of a single email.

Thanks

r1soft is block level backups... im not sure thats anything close to what you are looking for.

I have never herd of anything that would restore a single email... If they use outlook, he can simply use the "leave a copy on the server" option in outlook.

Yes, exactly. Maybe ask your client where he heard of this technology then look into that?

Thanks for the replies.

This is a company that has subsidiaries in 30 different countries and I think they are having some internal issues within the organization. They're not necessarily wanting to "spy" on anyone but I think their concern is the loss of customers if someone decides to quit and delete all of their email. A large number of the smaller remote offices use 100% webmail so the Outlook solution isn't really an option. I think that he got the idea from seeing our mailwatch/MailScanner setup. Since everything is logged to a database with a web frontend he can log in and forward messages that way. I would have him just use that server but he wants to see all mail from user1@hisdomain.com sent to user2@hisdomain.com and with my current setup, interdomain email is not sent to the mailwatch/MailScanner server.

Does anyone have experience with the r1soft solution? I'm signing up for the trial now to see how well it integrates with Ensim Pro X. I'm curious about what this does to Ensim upgrades tho (if there ever will be any now that Parallels owns them). I'm fairly certain that I could talk the client into using a full mailbox restore solution if it really came down to it (which it looks like it is).

I'm not sure what you're using as a mail server, but from what you're describing if you're using qmail, you might look into the qmail-tap patch. This would do exactly what you're needing. You can find it here:

http://www.inter7.com/?page=qmailtap

Basically, you specify an email address on the system and it sends a copy of any email sent or received to another address you specify.

I'm really only familiar with qmail, but you should be able to get similar functionality with other email server software.
