Hey,
I need some help getting things started.
I just got a box with plesk, and I've been able to get it working and getting a few sites up, but I don't even know where to start when it comes to the backend.
I'm comfortable with UNIX commands, but I know abs nothing about running a server...
Apparently, from what I've read, I need to install/upgrade
the openSSH...?
a firewall...
anti spam/email software...
webalizer...
How do I these things, and what else do I need to or should I do as well...
Thanks,
Tom

Is there an up to date walk through for any of this stuff?
something simple that someone doing it for their first time
could understand...

Best thing to do is to head over to the HOW-TO's section of this forum and read "First things to do after you get a brand new WBL"
BTW, in that post, SSH is 2.9. The latest version (highly recommended) is 3.4.

i have 3.1 installed, which i'm guessing is good enough for now...
i've been reading and reading through these forums...
but they aren't exactly organized to find specific things...
then you have the pro guys going off in what seems like another language to me...
that post in particular was good, i couldn't use it for the shell becuase of the date, but I need better explanations then type this... something more along the lines of you need to do this in order to fix this. this command is used to do this, etc....
I understand the common unix commands, but the ones in examples are way over my head....

Tommy,I do understand where your coming from, I will say this, for the most part, most of the how to's were written with newbies in mind.. I realize its a leap of faith but in most cases, if you read the thread you can get a feel for what the how to is having you do as well as you get to see what issues may pop up and how to fix them.. but most of the commands and steps are written as such that you can copy paste and be good to go..
to learn more about the commands goto the command line and man command,
ie.. man ls whill tell you about ls and its options

hey,
i'm starting to understand them a little better, and will admit they are not as bad as i thought...
problem is when things don't follow the instructions...
I tried installing bastille firewall... got the files, installed them
then the command to start the program won't work....
i apologize for the bitterness... just a lot of frustration when you are trying to do it for the first time...
