I'm buying a new box in about 4 days. Which server do you think would be the fastest for hosting SRCDS? My options:
Core 2 Quad 4x2.4Ghz | 4GB of RAM
or
2x Xeon 4x1.6Ghz 5310 | 2GB of RAM

Kenny, I would go with the Quad Core Kentsfield 2.4 Ghz because some games are single threaded, like the BF series, and would need all 2.4 Ghz to run.

Did you get my email a couple of days ago?

Go with the first one, they are similar processors but ultimately you will benefit more from a higher clock speed.

Dual Clovertowns seems a little overkill, especially if you only give it 2 gigs of RAM. It will have twice the cores as that Kentsfield Quad.

Thanks for the help guys, I'm buying the Kentsfield C2Q@2.4Ghz with 4GB of RAM. Currently I have a Xeon 5130, and it's just not performing...We're only using about 1GB of RAM, but we have 2GB currently, so that's why I thought the 4GB was overkill and was leaning towards just 2 GB. I guess with the faster processor, we can host more servers and more slots, so the 4GB should leave some headroom.

Get a 64 bit OS with that quad core just incase you wish to go over 4 GB of RAM.

Note that this would require the Enterprise version of Windows if you do end up going that route.

Technically the OS being 32 or 64 bit has no relation to the amount of memory the system will recognize. As Kyle said, Enterprise version is going to be needed if you want more than 4GB of memory.

There is certainly no need to get an Enterprise level version of Windows. Means he is going to be paying another $20-25 more a month.

Like Doc said there are other 64 bit versions out there available for the cover price.

The company I am buying from does not charge extra for the Windows license. It will be $269/month for a C2Q 2.4 Ghz, 4GB of RAM, 250GB SATA drive, 100mbit connection with 1500GB of bandwidth, and Windows server 2003 Standard..
doc
I can do that same server for $249/month and that includes TCAdmin, 50 game server files and 3 voice servers. Install all of those games and voice servers at the click of a button.

I think you made a mistake on your website, or are you only offering 1500 MB of bandwidth with your boxes? icon_lol.gif
doc
Sorry about that. I have corrected it. Depending on the datacenter, monthly bandwidth varies from 1500 - 2000 GB.

I noticed that aswell and let Doc know.

One letter unfourtunately makes a big difference in this case.

But we can forgive him icon_wink.gif
