I occasionally used to use the dnsreport.com site but not enough to pay the new membership fee. Anyone have some other good sites that provide similar functions to dnsreport.com but for free?

I also used to use it on occation but not since it's turned into a pay site.
I've done some research and would love to work with someone to design one and if so, I'd provide the domain name and server to house it on. I would not plan on charging people for this service though.

I had a coder start working on one for me but it fell through, I need to get in contact with somebody else... I already have a few decent domains for it just need to get the site hah
Jeff
For me tonight DNS report is just one big loop and doesn't allow any lookups, so it could be a good time icon_smile.gif

I broke down and registered for a free account. Got the login via email and logged in. It says "welcome Jeff" indicating I'm logged in, but when I enter a domain and click "DNSReport" it just takes me back to the page that says:

DNSreport is one of the most powerful reporting tools in the DNS Universe. Don't configure your DNS without it.

You've just enjoyed one for free.
Become a member and get unlimited access - just $36/yr.

Uh huh. Those blank lookups are great! Not. Tried it again and same thing. Oh well icon_sad.gif

I'm afraid I'm cheap, and have a hard time paying $36/year for things I can do for free. Still the site used to be really handy. I would think this would be a natural for an ad-supported site. I used to have a button on my toolbar that would take me directly to the results for my main domain, and when I was sitting idle I would click it once a month or so just to be sure everything was still fine, no warnings, etc. I think simply placing some server, hosting, web-related software ads on that page would probably generate plenty of revenue to keep it running and even slightly profitable. Heck, if the fee were just a couple dollars a year I'd probably fork it over. But they've priced themselves out of my market since I only used the site once a month or so.
markcausa
I just caved in and purchased a membership for the company! tongue.gif
Jeff
That's good too - I don't have anything against them and they provided a great free service for years and deserve to make some profit now.

My cheap side just can't justify paying $36/year for something I only used monthly and infrequently - if I used it every couple days I would have no problem paying. And I bet there are thousands of others who place some value on a site like this that saves them a minute or two over looking through things manually, just not quite that much value, so could be a good niche to create a similar site at a lower pricepoint.
markcausa
Hmmm. We do A LOT of WHOIS lookups every week and use our own, in house script for that because its built into our backend.

If anyone's interested in that WHOIS lookup script, I'll find the link.
ajz4221
Yea, I used them all the time. I just signed up for a free account awhile back but now I have to make sure I limit myself to using the service when it is most necessary so I don't use up my allowance from the free account.

$36 a year is not much (as many people will say).
However, look at all the "small fee" based sites us I.T. people rely on.
You start adding up the yearly fee's of many sites that have saved our rears and you realize how expensive a "small fee" becomes.

I am in the process of making a dns report like site. Unfortunately, limited time has caused the project to go on the back burner.

I used to use dnsstuff.com and dnsreport.com a lot when they were free and used to be very active on their forums. When they went to a pay site, the whole climate changed and I stopped using it.

If I ever get my dns site up, I'll post a link here.
doc
One of the TP workers suggested www.arin.net but I found it to be not as informative as DNS reports.com

Just FYI, sign up for a free membership, and when you have used up your free searches, delete your cookies and you will be able to search again. The only problem is after about 6 months the free membership expires and you will have to create another one. I got tired of playing the run around game with them and just paid them. wacko.gif
markcausa
Ah, you'd think they would measure how many per IP instead of using cookies...

Wouldn't that result in aol dialup users where many users share a proxy IP being locked out?

--on second though, aol dialup users are probably not using the site anyway icon_mrgreen.gif

Hi,

I am new here and i was searching for a script that i could use on my servers to generate a DNS report like dnsstuff.com (dnsreport.com). After reading your comments, i see that i might have some useful information for you. I found a site called dnscolos.com which has some of the information that dnsreport.com generates. but it's not as complete.. but it might be good for any of you, that's why i just registered here to give this reply.

Maybe i could help..

http://www.intodns.com

Enjoy

Found this site with my stumble button.

http://www.iptools.com/

very nice
Jeff
Thanks to both of you! iptools provides great tools much like dnsstuff used to for free; and intodns seems to be a great free replacement for dnsreport (not that I don't appreciate the lookups dnsreport provided for me in the past... I just don't use it frequently enough to justify their current fees.) intodns looks really nice and clean too, and gives information about the rnds entry which is a handy feature that I don't think dnsreport had in place for their single-page overview report. Nice!

Not to beat an old topic, but you can use http://whois.phirefast.com for free.
James Jhurani
why not just use the whois function built into the servers you are paying for...

I just use my dns stuff account..

Sadly however i renewed again this year about a week before the TP dnsstuff offer came out icon_sad.gif
Jeff
http://www.intodns.com and http://www.iptools.com are still working as ok replacements for me so far. Not quite as feature packed as dns-report used to be, but pretty darn close and no hassle or charge to use them. I admire dns-report's monetizing their tools that they graciously provided for so long, but for me their rate would come to $2 a query which is just too rich for my blood.

What "TP DNSSTUFF offer?"
Are you referring to "ThePlanet?"
Does ThePlanet have some sort of a deal for customers?
Martyn Dale
I got a coupon code sent through from TP's marketing address, but worded from dnsstuff, saying as a customer of TP .....

Expired back in feb though

Ack!

I can ask around about a new one. We did some work with DNSStuff pretty recently, so it's not out of the question.

BTW: DNSStuff has an awesome host. icon_smile.gif

Haha yea i noticed a couple of days ago. Was having routing issues, and was trying some traces from various locations.

I tried one from dnsstuff and i was like like "¬_¬ sigh, if i wanted a TP server to TP server trace, id have used one of mine"

I know now icon_razz.gif

The strange thing about the email i got, was that it seemed to know i was a customer at both already hah

dnsgoodies.com is a pretty good one too

Thanks for the posts regarding the quality, accuracy and reliability of DNSreport. There is no other tool alternative online that performs like DNSreport. We run tens of thousands of these every single day. As a customer of the planet, I often visit this forum and wanted to respond to this string.

I would like to address a few things I have read:
1) We have tried very hard to keep prices low. $79 is for an entire year for unlimited access to tools that help you pinpoint domain and email issues FAST. We have many popular free tools that will remain that way – always.
2) We are constantly improving our tools. Soon, DNSreport will have a wiki for each subtest so you can learn from our the global community on what works best to resolve particular issues.
3) TP coupon? Yes, Here is a new coupon -- A5C99B5B7A. You can use this throughout 2008 to receive a $25 discount of a professional Tool Set (which includes DNSreport).

DNSstuff is committed to developing tools and alert services that make the life of IT professionals easier. Please feel free to let me know how we are doing.

Bummer! I wish I had found that coupon a few months ago.
Oh well, I ordered my professional unlimited account a few months ago.
Even though we (small busines owners) have these small fees here and there that add up quickly (in addition to hardware/software upgrade costs), the features are too useful to turn down so I have realized it is WELL worth it.
Nice to see someone from the company post on the forums.

I was able to use a free version of their site today while they upgraded their database so it definitely wasn't offline, but rather open to everyone (even the pro tools). icon_mrgreen.gif That is a pretty cool thing to do instead of just shutting everything off and asking us to come back later.

also

dnsstuff has this tool in their dev lab called vector trace and it uses 3 servers (1 inside and 2 outside of the planet) to run trace routes. very cool.

Keep up the good work dnsstuff, you guys rock.

dnsstuff.com was down, www.dnsstuff.com was up as discussed in this topic.

Anyone know (on any of these services) how to run a dnsreport-like report on a domain name, but specifying a different name server?

For example, I am setting up a new pair of name servers, and I want to test them before I make them authoritative for a domain. In dnsreport, I used to be able to say something like "mydomain.com&server=newNameServer.com".

But that syntax no longer works.

Doesn't have to be dnsreport, I'll take dnssy, or iptools, or anything. We have a paid dnsreport subscription, I've wandered thru the (little bit of) help that they have, tried contacting them directly, no response so far.

Any thoughts? Thanks.

I think it is now &nameserver= instead of &server=

Nope, that doesn't w ork either. But thanks for the thought.
