I have MRTG set up on a windows server polling my network devices. I sporadically get the following error

The description for Event ID ( 1000 ) in Source ( MRTG ) cannot be found. The local computer may not have the necessary registry information or message DLL files to display messages from a remote computer. You may be able to use the /AUXSOURCE= flag to retrieve this description; see Help and Support for details. The following information is part of the event: 2007-10-09 03:15:32: ERROR: Target[10.10.1.3_32][_IN_] ' $target->[31]{$mode} ' did not eval into defined data.

And it is Immediately followed by this error.

The errors show up in the Application event log and when they happen they appear to happen for every interface.

This happens when the device does not respond. Or responds with invalid data. How often are you polling the devices and what is the current average load?

I've had this happen myself for devices such as temperature and fan speed sensors. If you can try increasing the timeout period in the mrtg.conf file or increasing the number of retries it might mitigate it. Can you see in the graphs where it isn't able to poll the data?

Thanks!

That would make sense. We have this running across a VPN to our data center and we have been having issues keeping the VPN Tunnel up.

Thanks,

Steve
