so,
in ssh can i zip, tar or someway esle compress entire directory, or better yet - "home"?
i am looking for alternative way of backup... like compressing home and then downloading it to my pc.
although don't know how to restore it? simply uncompress it?

Thats going to get pretty unmanageable fast - do you have any control panel? I would suggest using the control panels backups then downloading those. Even if you did just do /home you don't get any of the config files which would take days to recreate depending on how big your server is. There are a lot of other files to backup if you want to back it all up.

cPanel has an automated backup that works fine, why not use that then download the .tar.gz it generates?
