I have done BUILD and INSTALL world many times on FreeBSD systems but only when I had console access.
I know I can BUILD WORLD via remote SSH, however, its safer to INSTALL WORLD in single user mode.
Is there a way to get console access on my FreeBSD system at The Planet?
Does the Planet allow serial connections from another server?
Install world can be done without single user mode. Most of the stuff installworld touches is not used by a standard server. I do however that you shut down services, like Apache, MySQL and others. Besides that, hundreds if not thousands of server administrators around the world do an install world while in multi-user mode.
I have NEVER had anything go wrong while doing it, and I am currently sitting at home surrounded by 4 FreeBSD machines that I never go into single user mode to install world.
