Full Version: Gaming Server – Network

Hello all,

I rent a server on ThePlanet’s TotalControl network. Its original purpose was to serve as a webserver and I’ve since combined roles. It now functions both as a webserver and gaming server. Even though I really don’t see a performance issue, I’d like to separate the two machines by purchasing an additional one.

The game server runs on Windows and is currently not supported by the Insomnia365’s Cortex control panel. It’s not really “upload heavy” and averages about 1mbit during the week and 1.5-2mbits on the weekends. That leads me to this question:

Should I purchase a normal server on ThePlanet’s network or should I splurge and get a gaming server from Insomnia365? I understand that both servers use the same network, so is there any advantage to having a “gaming server” from Insomnia365? Is it closer to the core routers than the rest of the “normal servers”?

I priced out both servers, and naturally the Insomnia365 server is more expensive. I'm currently not experiencing any issues with it, but Latency is a big selling point for me and if there’s any difference whatsoever, I will go with Insomnia.

Thanks for your input!

The servers use the same network, there is no difference between them. The difference with the I365 servers is the cortex control panel, and the specifications of the machines.

Server are the same and I believe they are the same price. The benefit to Insomnia servers is the in-house control panel, Cortex and the fact that I365 hosts the game files for you so you don't need to upload any files. If a game is not supported by cortex you can just create and run the server on the desktop. For that reason, the I365 boxes have the best of both worlds.

For a gaming server MAKE SURE you request Dallas. We had huge problems for gaming servers in the Houston datacenter. The latencies there spike to about 300 a few times a day and that's not cool for gaming. Dallas has been great to our 3 boxes there.
