Since we received no reply the first time http://forums.theplanet.com/index.php?showtopic=87607 I thought we'd try again. biggrin.gif
plasma
any word on this?
doc
It runs on the UT 3 engine so it should not be a problem. It is more a matter how well of a multiplayer server that they have built that will determine if it is added to Cortex.
ECF
I watched the trailers today. Looks like a great game biggrin.gif

Zach any word from the giants? (cough, cough EA)

We are only 18 days from launch.

From IGN
Get Ready to Get Airborne
Aug 14, 2007 at 2:08 PM - Matthew Pruitt -
"The last and final issue was the dedicated servers, or lack thereof. We are pleased to say that we were playing on a dedicated server and it will be available at launch. Several stock options have been added for administrators, a custom interface is available for launching the server, and the ability to remotely connect is also there. The dedicated server we were playing on also held 16 people, which is four more than the previous 12. The team is still working and testing to get that number up even higher. Server administrators will also be happy to know that Linux binaries should be available close to launch, if not at launch. "
doc
Good info. Thanks for the heads up.
grimgrinch
Np, anytime. I'll keep passing on what info I can...

From ButchCassidy on FPSAdmin.com forums

Funny you should mention patches I just posted this on another site...With regards to player numbers as far as I know they working on increasing the numbers but nothing beyond that.

It will just address what's been changed. But that's all going to have to be figured out by engineers who generally know far more than I do.

So how will this work exactly?

All servers will upload Binaries and that means that no install will actually take place on a server.

The patches will be executables so they won't recognise the server binaries as they are not actaully installed and therefore not in the server registry.

Which means that that either server admins will have to edit their registries (not a wise thing to have to do on a server) to run a patch or the executable will have to run onto an installed game on another PC then the altered files lifted and uploaded.

Hopefully the patch readme will actually tell Admins exactly what files are to be replaced if not then we are looking at uploading the whole thing again?

Has the dev team actually thought about how this process will work with regards to patching servers?

BTW Rude
I might add that there are plenty of peeps who have exprience with Unreal server setups and using the admins etc.
Who visit this site in particular many of the Red Orchestra guys.
So you will have some people to call on when the time comes.

You can copy the registry key locally and upload it to the server. Armed Assault is like that.
grimgrinch
They'd probably like to hear that. Might want to drop them a line...

As far as Airborne, the SP DEMO came out yesterday. It's shaping up pretty good so far.

Wondering if we could please get an update? tongue.gif

Thanks!

I am in love. This game rocks.
Smokey
They better be adding MOH:A to Cortex. The Cortex piece was the attractive extra I went for when shopping for dedicated servers to start my game hosting company on, and frankly since I've been a customer they have hardly added any games to the Cortex cPanel. I was hoping that ArmA would have gotten added, but that has been out since May in the US and we still don't have it added. If MOH:A doesn't get added to Cortex the week that game is released, they will lose my business and I will spend my money elsewhere. I don't want excuses, this is what I pay you guys for. I will not be uploading 7 GB's every time EA releases a patch for this game.

I'm with ya Smokey except on one thing, let's bump up that time to have it added to Cortex to no more than 48 hours! It's imperative for us to be one of the first servers up and running. Being a week out before we can host the game is terrible (and makes insomnia look bad).

For those managing their own boxes there is a Admin Server Upload and File Swap Group over at fpsadmin.com. The group is being organized so that capable admins that can privately share the upload responsibilities.

About the FPS admin thing. That can't be legal having people share files and also I don't think I would want to give some one I don't know FTP access to my server. I understand what they are trying to do but just seems like a bad idea.
Smokey
I agree a week is generous, especially since I've been waiting for Arma for so long and it is still not on the list. I will check out the FPS admin thing. I did that with our clan for Arma, every time a patch came out, a bunch of us split up the files to help speed up the process. We shouldn't have to do that, since that is what we are paying the planet for. I've been tossing around the idea about doing server co-location and buying a server instead. If I don't see MOH:A in Cortex very close to release date, it might be just the motivation I need to make the switch. I guess they don't realize how important it is to be the first people online when a new title comes out. If your server is not online in the first week your server doesn't get priority in the master server list, costing us the ability to effectively market of servers. I guess we'll have to wait and see next week when it comes out.
grimgrinch
What scares me most is no reply to this thread from Zach.

Smokey, if you make a move elsewhere would you mind letting me know? Thanks!

FYI, I do see that Art of War Central has already started offering servers for Airborne among a few others.
doc
I hate to be a pessimist but I don't see MOH Airborne getting added to Cortex in the near future. When you only have 1 person doing support it is hard to find time for development.

Most GSPs are offering pre-ordering of MOH Airborne which basically amounts to taking your money now and earning interest off of it while you wait for the game to come out. Personally I think that is pretty cheesy. I am going to start taking orders the day before release to get an idea of demand but don't feel it is necessary to take orders 1 month before release especially since a lot of games get delayed. Crysis was originally set for February release and now it is November.
DougK94
Doc,

I will bet that you will be able to offer this to your customers with your 'other' game control panel long before it is in Cortex.......
doc
LOL! I only use Cortex for ranked servers so your definitely right. I will be offering them as soon as I upload this monster to the server. Wonder how well all 7 GB will zip. mellow.gif

Well Doc, if that's the case then I'll have to get a quote from you! tongue.gif

I hope this isn't a sign of things to come with ThePlanet. We've been a customer for 3+ years and if they can't get Airborne set up in time then that will be an issue for me and my clanmates.

That is ALL I used to use cortex for too. It will take a little while to upload I am afraid icon_sad.gif...... But at least with the "other panel", we do not have to wait for 1 person to update the panel to support a new game or mod. (Even tho klaude in the past and now Zach do a decent job of squeezing this stuff into their many duties here at TP)

If you have an unranked server you can run one on the desktop but it seems like the majority of Insomnia clients are running ranked servers and that leaves your ability to add new games to them.
Smokey
"Other" Cpanel??? Do tell!! Did one of you setup your own? Can anyone access it for it free or a fee?

I'm going to call The Planet on Monday and try to get a supervisor on the phone, and see if we can't get them to take some of Zach's workload off of him so he can support Cortex better, or hire someone just to support it. They are making a killing, they can more than afford to give him some help. Sorry Zach for the complaints in this post. We all know what Corporate America is like, it's not your fault. The planet needs to be aware of their shortcomings, to help better serve their customers before they don't have any. We all here appreciate the wonderful job you all do keeping the network running great, but this Cortex Cpanel was the selling feature that brought most of us here, and without it you all are just another data center renting over-priced servers.

That's my case 100%. We're running a ranked server and it's in TP hands. mellow.gif Stupid for me to rent another server when the one I have is capable.

Remember Smokey, Monday is a holiday *sigh*. I spent a good hour today trying to find out what is happening (if anything) and to no avail. I decided in the end to open up a ticket so that it is at least showing up somewhere in the system instead of just on these boards. I suggest the rest do the same that want to see Airborne added to Cortex. The more requests TP gets the more I would think Airborne will get noticed and hopefully bumped up the totem pole.

The only way I can give TP more of my business is if I have high traffic on my servers which in turn requires me to buy more slots. Please give Zach a helper!
doc
It is more complex than that. Basically it boils down to Insomnia not having enough customers to justify another person's salary. Why hire another person for a program that won't generate the revenue. This is just my humble opinion, but I don't see a 2nd person getting added.

If you run a ranked server then you are limited. If you get an unranked server you can run Cortex games and then run non-supported games on the desktop.

About control panels, there are plenty out there. But you have to do all of the work and supply the game files. Cortex is nice in that it does all of the work and they even supply the game files. If you want a free program to help manage your servers, check out ServerDoc. If you want something that is loaded to the gills with features but costs money, then ask around and you will get plenty of recommendations.
Smokey
I use ServerDoc to run all my game servers, I was just hoping that someone had something like Cortex setup within the network so I could pull over the MOH:A game files quickly icon_wink.gif. I don't understand why it would take so long to add. Most of us aren't using Cortex for any of its features except to pull game files quickly. Why don't they scrap Cortex, and just buy the games, install them to a server in the datacenter, and give us access to them; saving us all two days of uploading? It wouldn't take me more than 30 minutes to setup no matter how busy I was.

Have any of you heard about the dedicated server files not being released until the first patch around September 17th? I saw it on another forum, but wasn't sure if it was true.
doc
I know at release there is no dedicated server files so you have to zip/rar the game files and upload.
DougK94
Some games do not have free dedicated server files, they require you to have a purchased copy of the game and upload the files yourself. I have always wondered how TP was able to include these files in Cortex unless they have some kind of licensing agreement with these game publishers.

Waiting for a game or game patch to be installed by the Cortex developers, along with TP not selling Cortex to be used in other locations are the 2 biggest drawbacks to Cortex. Cortex is great for a clan to get their own dedicated server and saving $$$ over what they would have to pay a GSP. The point and click install of games is super for those that do not know or want to take the time to install and configure game servers themselves. Cortex is also great in that it allows for a reasonably priced ranked server. Personally, these 2 drawbacks are why I use another commercial product for my game GSP. With this, I do not have to wait on anyone other than myself to be able to support the latest games or mods. I only need and use Cortex to be able to run ranked games. Cortex is a very good product, but the other product I use suits my needs much better. Also for these reasons, Cortex is not the best fit for a GSP.

ServerDoc is good option for those running personal server, but for a GSP, it is not the best option.
doc
I had talked with the Insomnia devs about how they host the games and they have a contract with the game makers to host the files. For this reason, they can not host any game because the game manuf has to agree to the terms. I am sure some manuf are not going to let them host their files but have not heard of anyone saying no.

ServerDoc is if you have your own unranked dedicated server and need a simple, free program to keep your game server running. If the game server crashes, it will restart it automatically. It does not have any bells or whistles like other panels but for free you can't beat it.
grimgrinch
Smokey it is confirmed.

From http://medalofhonor.totalgamingnetwork.com/

A Letter from Producer Patrick Gilmore
Patrick Gilmore producer of Medal of Honor Airborne, has sent a letter to the PC community. Take a look:

Hello everyone –

In a couple of days, Medal of Honor Airborne will be on store shelves. Judging from reactions to the demo, our air drop, weapon upgrades, and new approach to open layout are working together to produce a unique FPS experience, just as we’d hoped. I can’t tell you how exciting it is to get it into people’s hands.

I also want to bring you news about the dedicated servers.

During the Fort Bragg Community Summit, I said that we would be releasing dedicated servers at the launch of the game. We also received a lot of feedback regarding features you hoped for. A couple of weeks ago, I made the call to go deeper with features and customizations, to deliver as much as we could in our first drop to the community. I am happy to report that the dedicated server is complete; it’s working great, and we were able to include a huge number of options. However, it still has to finish its pass through test and CQC before we can release it, which means we will not be able to get it out in a day 1 patch. After digging into some of the issues with the patch team, I am expecting us to hit the week of September 17.
Throughout production, in the dialog between the community and team members, there has been a theme of “take the time to get it right.” I thought of that as we determined which options to include, and I’m psyched about the great list of modifications available. Here are the options admins will have at their disposal for setting up games:

- Game Name
- Game Type
- Welcome Message
- Private Game setup
- Rounds (Best of…)
- Round Time Limit
- Max Players
- Punkbuster
- Friendly Fire – On/Off
- Sniper Tracers – On/Off
- Weapon Upgrades – All On/All Off
- Disable Auto Rifle Class
- Disable Rifle Class
- Disable SMG Class
- Disable Sniper Rifle Class
- Disable Rocket Class
- Enable Ammo Drop
- Enable Health Drop
- Enable Weapon Drop
- Enable Voice Commands
- Spawning Invincibility Time
- Pre-Spawn Delay for Axis, Allies, Non-Airborne games
- Post Spawn Delay for Axis, Allies, Non-Airborne games
- Show Compass
- Show Crosshairs
- Show Enemy Compass Dots
- Show Enemy Names
- Show Friendly Compass Dots
- Show Friendly Names
- Show Grenade Indicators
- Show Health Bar
- Show Hit Indicators
- Show HUD
- Show Score and Time
- Show Stance Indicator
- Show Text
- Show Who Killed Me (camera move)
- Time to Show Who Killed Me
- Wait Time Between Rounds
- Wait Time Between Matches
- Map Rotation Setup

Beyond day one, I am happy to report we are already in action on plans for future title updates and launch support, as well as the release of additional content, weapons, maps and game modes. As always, your feedback and requests to BlackHat are a critical part of our ongoing work on Airborne!

Thanks, everyone, for your support of Medal of Honor Airborne, and for your patience while we work to get information out to you. While we’re getting all of these options tested and ready for release, we hope that you’ll enjoy the experience we’ve crafted in the game. We think it’s the best in the Medal of Honor series.

Troubleshooting
==================================================================

Please be aware that an outdated video driver or sound driver can
lead to slow and choppy gameplay, or in some cases can prevent
the game from running at all. To ensure an enjoyable experience
with this game, be sure that you have the most recent video and
sound drivers installed. These drivers are typically available
for download from your system or hardware manufacturer's Web
site. If you are not sure what type of video or sound card you
have, or you need assistance with updating the drivers on your
system, please refer to the documentation that came with your
system or peripheral.

==================================================================
Optimizing Graphical Performance
==================================================================

Medal of Honor Airborne automatically selects a default
graphical configuration that should be well-suited to your
system's specifications. However, you may adjust the game's
graphical configuration to suit your preference by opening
the "Medal of Honor Airborne Setup".

To access the "Medal of Honor Airborne Setup," click the "Start"
button in the Windows taskbar, then click "Programs", then click
"Electronic Arts", and then click "Medal of Honor Airborne" in
Windows XP.

In Windows Vista click the "Start" button in the Windows taskbar,
then click "All Programs", then click "Electronic Arts", and
then click "Medal of Honor Airborne."

To achieve better performance, lower settings are recommended.

==================================================================
Optimizing Multiplayer Performance
==================================================================

The multiplayer experience can be greatly improved with better performance. To improve
Performance, launch Medal of Honor Airborne Setup and set Post-Processing Effects to
Simple (if that option hasn’t already been set for you). To yield the best improvement in
Performance, we recommend reducing your resolution.

Again, to achieve better performance, lower settings are recommended.

==================================================================
Known Issues
==================================================================

You may experience problems attempting to run the game with a
monitor set to "portrait mode"--that is, if your monitor is set
to display content vertically instead of in a traditional 4:3 or
16:9 aspect ratio. Medal of Honor Airborne only
supports monitors running in standard 4:3 modes or widescreen
16:9 modes.

For users experiencing problems with Creative Sound Blaster Audigy
cards running under Windows Vista it is recommended that they lower
settings to improve performance.

As of the date posted at the top of this ReadMe file, Windows
Vista is compatible with ATI-based video cards with Radeon
X1300 Pro chipsets and above, in addition to NVIDIA-based video cards
with GeForce 6600 GT series chipsets and above. By extension, the
game is compatible with these chipsets on Windows Vista
machines.

If you have an NVIDIA SLI or ATI Crossfire video cards setup, we
recommend you not use the “Force Split Frame Rendering” option.
This option actually degrades performance in Medal of Honor Airborne.

NOTE: NVIDIA SLI and ATI Crossfire modes are not supported
in Medal of Honor Airborne.

If you are having audio problems with SigmaTel sound cards, download
the latest drivers and adjust your audio settings.

NOTE: SigmaTel sound cards are not supported in Medal of Honor Airborne.

==================================================================
Multiplayer Information
==================================================================

When attempting to play Medal of Honor Airborne online,
please note that the minimum character length for your "Online ID"
is four characters. If you attempt to login with a nickname that
is three characters or less, the "Login" button will remain
inactive. Please also note that the maximum allowable length of
an Online ID is 15 characters, and you cannot start your Online
ID with any non-alphabet character.

You are allowed to create one online account per CD key.

==================================================================
NAT/Firewall
==================================================================

It should also be noted that certain Belkin and Netgear routers have
irresolvable issues specifically when attempting to connect to
each other.

If you are playing Medal of Honor Airborne behind a
software firewall, you will need to add the game's executable
to the "Exceptions or Allowed Programs" list provided by your
software firewall. You will need to provide your software
firewall with the actual path to the game's executable. This
file is typically located in "C:\Program Files\Electronic Arts\Medal of Honor Airborne\UnrealEngine3\Binaries\MOHA.exe".

There should be no need for you to use Port Forwarding/Port
Triggering to play the game behind your firewall. Medal of
Honor: Airborne should work successfully behind most
personal firewalls.

Medal of Honor Airborne uses UDP port 10000

If you are experiencing general NAT connection difficulties, exit the game, restart the game, and log back into your account.

Additionally, if you are using a combination of a cable modem and
a router, you should contact your ISP/cable provider in order to
disable your modem's built-in firewall.

If you are experiencing connection difficulties with your router, forward Port 10000.
If your router supports UPnP then try turning it on.

The following routers have connection difficulties and are not
supported:

LinkSys WRT54GX4
Netgear WGT624
NetGear WGR614v7
NetGear FV318
NetGear RP614v2

==================================================================
*Administrator Privileges
==================================================================

Please note that you may not be able to add Medal of Honor
Airborne to your software firewall's exceptions list if you are
not logged in as an administrator in Windows. You will either
need to do so from an account that has administrator rights, or
add your existing account to the administrators list. To do so, do
the following:

Audio Information
==================================================================

If some of the audio in the game seems to be missing, this is
likely due to your speaker settings. If your speaker settings are
set to a surround-sound configuration, but you do not have a
surround-sound speaker system, then some audio channels will not
be heard during gameplay.

To check and adjust your speaker settings if your operating system
is Windows XP:

1. Click the "Start" button in the Windows taskbar.
2. Choose "Control Panel".
3a. If your Control Panel is in the default Category View, click
"Sounds, Speech, and Audio Devices". Then click "Sounds and
Audio Devices".
3b. If your Control Panel is in Classic View, double-click
"Sounds and Audio Devices".
4. Under the "Speaker settings" heading, click "Advanced".
5. Choose the correct configuration in "Speaker setup" drop-down
menu.
6. Click "OK".

To check and adjust your speaker settings if your operating system
is Windows Vista:

1. Click the "Start" button in the Windows taskbar.
2. Click "Control Panel" in the Start menu.
4. Locate and click "Hardware and Sound"
5. Click "Manage audio devices" under the "Sound" heading.
6. Select your speakers and click "Configure".
7. Choose the correct configuration and follow the instructions
that appear.

This should resolve the issue.

Found this today from Blackhat the EA rep for Airborne;

Quote:
I'm working on getting the patch notes out today that show the items being patched. This patch is MOSTLY about getting the dedicated server functioning and released. The reason I don't like to release stuff too early is because many can't distinguish between "early info" and a "promise." Too often we've let out some early info on something, and if it changes in the least, we get crucified for "breaking a promise." So the solution is to wait until I'm pretty much sure of what's happening, then to release the information. It's a damned if you do, damned if you don't situation, frankly, but it is what it is.

Anyway, as I said - I'm hoping to get the patch notes and maybe the DS readme out today so people can start having a look at it. Fingers crossed

VI. Server Commands
VII. Credits

I. System Requirements
================================================== =========================

The following items are required to run a Medal Of Honor Airborne
dedicated server:

1. A broadband Internet connection or LAN connection.
2. A system that meets or exceeds the minimum system requirements
for the game.
3. The game successfully installed on the target computer.

II. Local Server Setup
================================================== =========================

To set up a server locally or remotely using VNC, follow these steps:

1. Run the dedicated server launcher (DSLauncher.exe)
2. In the 'Basic' tab, enter the username and password you registered
with EA. (If you have not created an account: run the game, in the
main menu choose 'Multiplayer', and click 'Create Account').
3. In the 'Miscellaneous' tab, enter the port you wish to run your
server on as well as the password to administrate it remotely.
4. In the 'Map Rotation' tab, add at least one map to your rotation
by selecting the map name and pressing the 'Add' button.
5. Configure any other options you wish to set.
6. Save your config file using File>Save to the default MOHA config
folder: "My Documents\EA Games\Medal of Honor Airborne™\Config".

You can open and save multiple dedicated server configurations. The
configuration that is currently open is the one that will be
launched.

NOTE: The first time you run the launcher, it should generate two
config files: MOHAGameTypes.ini and MOHAMaps.ini in the MOHA config
folder. These files are necessary for the dedicated server to run
properly and should only be modified by advanced users.

III. Remote Server Setup
================================================== =========================

To set up a server remotely (where you do not have physical access to
the computer or VNC), follow these steps:

1. Run the dedicated server launcher (DSLauncher.exe) locally.
6. Save your config file using File>Save.
7. Copy your saved config file (MOHADedicatedServer.ini by default),
MOHAGameTypes.ini and MOHAMaps.ini (which can be found in your
MOHA config folder) to the target computer's MOHA config folder:
"My Documents\EA Games\Medal of Honor Airborne™\Config".

IV. Running The Server
================================================== =========================

To run the server locally:

1. Follow the instructions in "II. Local Server Setup".
2. Run the dedicated server launcher (DSLauncher.exe).
3. Open the config file you want to run if it is not already open.
4. Press the 'Launch!' button.

To run the server remotely:

1. Follow the instructions in "III. Remote Server Setup".
2. Run MOHAServer.exe with the config file as a parameter:
MOHAServer.exe <config file name>
e.g. MOHAServer.exe MyDedicatedServer.ini

If you run MOHAServer.exe without any parameters, it will attempt to
load the default config name: MOHADedicatedServer.ini.

V. Administrating Remotely
================================================== =========================

Once connected, the dedicated server remote (DSRemote.exe) looks and
functions identically to the dedicated server.

To connect to a dedicated server remotely:

1. Run DSRemote.exe.
2. Enter the host name (IP address) of the sever.
3. Enter the server's port and password as specified in the config file.
4. If successful, the login dialog should disappear and "Remote
connection accepted" will be printed.

If you receive the "Connection failed." message, the host name or
port number was invalid. You may receive this message even with
correct values if the dedicated server has not yet initialized.

If you receive the "Login failed." message, the connection was
successful but your password was invalid.

Blackhat's (EA rep) latest post says the patch (dedicated server files included) should be out early next week. It was so sad that EA rushed this game out unfinished, they have really shot themselves in the foot on this one. Perfect example of another console port over game. **sigh** Hope once a few things are patched up that the MP can still be playable.

Server files are good if you plan on running a single clan server but do not do much as far as a fully functional multiplayer component needed to run multiple game servers on a single dedicated server.

I have to know which idiot at EA decided to require a EA account user and password in the ini file. Also was this the same idiot that decided to force the config files to be stored in c:\My Documents\EA\MOHAirbone folder.
