I'm sure I'm not the first to ask and I tried searching these forums, but I'm stuck. I'm setting up my own DNS but on only one server. Some of my domains are not allowed (by enom?) to be pointed to the new nameserver, such as .org and .us - I assume becuase there in not a separate redundant DNS.

For those domains I need to use theplanet nameservers (ns1.theplanet.com, ns2.theplante.com). So, I assume I'm supposed to use "DNS Change Request" (Orbit). When I go to DNS Change Request I see one small field for the domain name and one large text field below that, which I assume is for the IP address. Is this correct? Can I submit all the domains and the ip address of my server, or do I need to submit one DNS Change Request for each domain? Am I on the right track?

My confusion is the large text area appears to be for a lot more than just an ip address.

BTW, I know this forum is for setting up my own nameserver, but I tried using the "General Support Questions" forum and got a pink message saying that forum is "Read Only", so pardon me if this is not the appropriate forum for this. I seems the closest.

Are you sure you don't simply have to use the option to "push nameserver to foreign registries" or "Add Nameserver to All Foreign Registries" -- if you don't do this sometimes you'll find when you create new nameservers under one TLD (i.e. ns1.yourdot.com and ns2.yourdot.com) they won't work for .org or .info or other TLD's that are managed by a different registry now that the TLD registries are managed by different entities.

If you don't have this option, ask your registrar about the above.

I've not heard of any registrar not allowing you to point a domain to two nameservers because they believe they are on the same server/network/etc.

I have had several years to figure this one out...

I assume you are using a tool like dnsreport etc... In that case you will get complaints about glue and other errors if you are say hosting an .info TLD with a .com name server. Really the best way I have found for fixing it is running your own private name servers. Your domain registrar should let you register your own private name servers and use the IP that you designate.

Here is an extended example.
My servers hostname is XXX.yaddaydaa.com instead of using The Planets name servers I made my own... my bax has several IP addresses so I just picket two I wanted to use and then went to my domain registrar (Godaddy) and added a host ns1.yaddayadda.com with IP XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX and ns2.yaddayadda.com at ip XXX.XXX.XXX.XXx (where the ips are in place of the x's) and then saved it.

Then in cpanel/WHM I click on edit DNS zone. Go to the zone file for the domain that you just added the ns's for and add the records as follows at the bottom;

ns1 14400 in A (put in the IP that you specified for ns1 at your domain registrar)
ns2 14400 in A (put in the IP that you specified for ns2 at your domain registrar)

And save it... you will need to wait at least 48 hours to do the next part...

Now go into the same zone files where you input the A records and change the NS records to reflect your new name servers. They should work 100% without any problems. Keep in mind that you can do this for every individual domain name you want for me I went ahead and registered all of the TLD's for my server and then added their own name servers, keep in mind you can share name server IP's you can essentially run an unlimited number of private name servers off of the same two IP's
