Full Version: Mail server is just losing all incoming / outgoing e-mails

Hi,

For some unknown reason, our server (cpanel / exim / mailscanner) server became unresponsive yesterday evening. All I know is that it showed an unusually high load (>20) before it became completely unresponsive.

After resetting the server this morning via Orbit, everything seems to be running nicely again, except incoming and outgoing mail delivery. I sent myself e-mail to and from several third-party servers, and none of the e-mails got through. There is no bounce message either.

Exim and Eximstats are reported as "running" by cpanel. There is enough disk on the harddisks, so this does not seem to be the problem. There were 394 messages in the mailqueue, but forcing delivery via Cpanel did not have any effect. Nor did deleting the queued messages help.

New incoming mails are not delivered, nor do they show up in the mailqueue, nor does the server generate a bounce message.

I really don't know how to proceed and would greatly appreciate your assistance, especially as it seems we are losing e-mails. icon_cry.gif

Thanks,

Adrian

In case this happens to someone else as well, I fixed the problem (at least) by disabling Mailscanner:

rm /etc/exim_outgoing.conf
/scripts/buildeximconf
service exim restart

Not a perfect solution, but at least mail is flowing again icon_razz.gif

You might want to try restarting MailScanner now, to see if that works. I recently had an issue with sendmail, where I needed to shut down MailScanner, start up sendmail, wait, shut down sendmail and start up MailScanner again.

Sorry, I'm not familiar enough with Exim to know if that will actually work!

Hi Alden,

Thanks for your suggestion, but I think I'll rather keep my hands off since I am really just a part-time admin and I'm just happy it works (sort of) now. I'll probably let the guys at www.configserver.com do this, they set up Mailscanner in the first place. I was just looking for some quick solution which would avoid further loss of e-mails.
