Will it be possible to add these BF2 mods to Cortex in the future?

Currently in Cortex we have PoE2 (Point of Existence 2)
http://www.pointofexistence.com

A new mod out today is EoD2 (Eve of Destruction 2)
http://www.eodmod.com/forum/portal.php

Last week was DCON (Desert Conflict)
http://desert-conflict.org

This summer maybe FH2 (Forgotten Hope 2)

I love cortex but this is definitely a limitation of it. If I could edit the stock command line and add the maps easier it would be easy to do on your own. Maybe a option when logged in as admin, to modify the command line for BF2 to allow for mods.

I tried running a BF2:PR server on the desktop and set the query port to 29901 and the stock port was 16568. I installed a BF2142 server on query port 29900 and game port 17567 and the BF2 server's info was displayed in the 2142 cortex status.

Allowing a little more freedom on the instance management would remove Kevin's requirement to have these mods built into cortex.

Hope everyone had a good Easter!! rolleyes.gif

Do you have an unranked, Windows 2003 server with remote desktop? If so you could run it off of the desktop with no problems.

Ok, tried to get Tech support and this is what happened...

[16:58:50] Hollie F : Hello Matt, how can we assist you today?
[17:00:20] Matt : I would like to know how I can add Mods to a BF2 instance in the Cortex..
[17:01:53] Hollie F : you should be able to edit the config and add them via Additional Commands. As for the exact commands to run I'm not sure, but one moment I'll see if I can find some information for you
[17:02:16] Matt : In other words.. I have an Eve of Destruction 2 mod for BF2, however, there is no Engine for it, and was wondering if I can add the server files for it manually, where to put them and how to do it..
[17:03:01] Matt : I would be deeply appreciative for step by step instructions..
[17:04:04] Hollie F : Unfortunately you need to install the Engine to create the folders so you can place the mods for the game.
[17:04:40] Matt : Yes I know, its already been done..
[17:05:15] Matt : A BF2 instance is started, I just need to know where to put the mod files..
[17:05:23] Hollie F : One moment
[17:05:34] Matt : Thank you..
[17:06:22] Hollie F : Basically you just need to create the folder for the mod in the Engine folder and upload the mod to that folder
[17:06:33] Hollie F : IF the mod folder is not already there
[17:07:36] Matt : Already where?? Thats what I need to know, where do I look for and if I need to create one, what name do I give and where do I create it?
[17:10:08] Hollie F : Since it's ranked you'll have to do this through cortex panel. Go to the instance and click on browse files
[17:10:45] Hollie F : From here you can create a directory. I think it depends on the mod your installing so you'll need to look into that on your own. And you can just upload a file here.
[17:12:10] Matt : EoD is not ranked I dont think..
[17:12:30] Hollie F : Your hardware object states your cortex is ranked
[17:13:27] Matt : It is.. But I have the option of making it unranked as per what game I want.. Not all games are ranked..
[17:14:06] Matt : Holly, this doesnt answer my question...I dont know what folder to create,.
[17:14:06] Hollie F : Well what I mean is that since your cortex is ranked you do not have a superuser access and have to do this through your panel.
[17:14:38] Hollie F : As I said earlier it depends on the mod you are installing. You'll have to find out from the mod you're installing what folder to create if it needs a folder created.
[17:15:13] Matt : I dont know, I DLed the server files..
[17:15:48] Matt : This is a bit frustrating..
[17:16:37] Matt : I just need to know where to put the mod files..
[17:18:01] Matt : I'm looking at browse files and it gives me a dir of demos,pb (punkbuster),settings and etc..
[17:18:52] Your party has left this session.

That was my second attempt, this is what happened the 1st time..

[15:56:04] MattV : Hello Matt, how can we assist you today?
[15:57:14] Matt : Hi
[15:57:18] MattV : Hello
[15:57:26] MattV : What can I do for you?
[15:57:43] Matt : I was wondering how to add mods to the Cortex?
[15:58:20] Matt : IE. I have Eve Of Destruction mod files for BF2, and wanted to know if theres a way I can put them in there..
[15:59:17] MattV : putting them in the command line for the exe
[15:59:37] MattV : Can I have your username and password for orbit please?
[15:59:57] Matt : One moment
[16:00:00] MattV : ok
[16:00:37] Matt : login: ********
[16:00:49] Matt : password: *******
[16:01:04] MattV : Thanks
[16:03:13] Matt : Ok.. What do I do?
[16:03:46] MattV : one second
[16:15:43] Matt : Are you there?
[16:16:27] MattV : yes, I apologize for the delay
[16:16:56] Matt : I assume your researching the answer..
[16:17:06] MattV : yes
[16:30:52] MattV : ok, when you go to your instance list in cortex you, click on edit config for the engine you have the mod for
[16:31:17] Matt : Ok.. and...
[16:31:24] MattV : then at the top of the page you will see in the general information the actually commandline for the games server's exe
[16:31:31] MattV : there you can call your mods
[16:32:36] Matt : Ok.. How do you upload the mod into the server, IE. where do you put it?
[16:40:54] MattV : you upload them to mod/bf2
[16:42:07] MattV : sorry mods/bf2
[16:44:43] Matt : So I need to create that folder?
[16:44:57] MattV : that folder should be there
[16:45:05] MattV : if not you can create it
[16:45:15] Matt : Let me check.. One sec
[16:47:05] Matt : Ok, where do I create it?
[16:48:26] Matt : How about this.. Can you give me step by step instructions on how to do this?
[16:50:20] Your party has left this session.
[16:50:42] Matt : Hello?

So now I'm a bit frustrated.. I think the Planet should re-evaluate their techs, cause in these sessions as you can see, they both basically hung up the phone on me, so to speak..

Read the last post I made...

I just did and don't see that information. If you have a unranked Windows 2003 server I can show you how to run it. If you don't have an unranked Windows 2003 server you are S.O.L.

*edited - nevermind I see "our hardware object states your cortex is ranked" so you are SOL. I have yet to figure out how to do it. If you could control the server via BF2cc you would be able to do it, but since Cortex overwrites anything BF2cc does it does not work.

Only way to get it is to hope Kevin adds it as a plugin OR unrank your box. Disadvantage of ranked box is your completely dependent on i365 like a 3 month old is dependent on his parents.
doc
At one time I had a single ranked server. Was like that for about 1 1/2 yrs. Then I got an unranked box and forgot how easy it is to administrate your server without the limitation that the ranked OS puts on you. With the unranked server I have setup remote BF2/BF2142 VOIP servers, installed bf2 mods, run games not supported by cortex on the desktop, created custom skins for cortex, directly downloaded games via remote desktop, etc.

One way around it would be for access to the main command line for BF2 instances. Since the main command line is set you are stuck.

I spent the last week in Houston training our support team in how to use Cortex. Having never met most of them before I wasn't sure how well they'd take to Cortex. I found that they're eager to learn, love Cortex, and ask me all sorts of neat questions about it. I'm glad that they were able to provide the answers you got. That's way better than they could do 2 weeks ago. They've come a long way, and I'm super proud of them. Supporting Cortex is hard because there's so many games out there that you have to be an expert in. I could spend a week with a single class in Houston and not have them be experts.

Anyhow, I'll have dcon in the next patch. Cortex doesn't play nice with BF2/2142 mods. It's not as simple as in games like quake where you upload a few files then set a command line. The only way to run these games is to either get them supported in Cortex or to run them manually on unranked servers.

Well Kevin, I seriously hope you make an engine for Eve of Destruction 2.. Its a great mod and definitly worthy of such, the number of players for it is growing.. Anyways. what is dcon??

Desert Conflict. A desert combat mod for BF2. Pretty fun. icon_smile.gif
Grounded
Is there any hope of getting this added to cortex? It is a great mod for BF2. The sever files are released for it.
