Full Version: FREE ASSP X (ASSP eXtended - WHM addon with cPanel interface)
The Planet Forums > System Administration > HOWTOs

I'm proud to present that we have released final stable version of ASSP X (http://sultanserver.com/projects/asspx.tar.gz). (Installation instruction included in the archive)

What is ASSP X? ASSP X is the WHM addon module to automatically install/update ASSP (Anti Spam SMTP Proxy, the best replacement for buggy SpamAssassin, home page at http://assp.sourceforge.net/) with cPanel interface for your clients. Currently we support: x, x2, xmail, bluelagoon, monsoon, Netenberg's xcontroller, all RVSkin.com themes.

The best thing with our addon - it is FREE! Yes, no tricks or whatever.
Why to pay when you may get more for nothing icon_smile.gif

What is more important - it is so easy to use that you may install and use it with just basic knowledges!

Why to choose ASSP? Because it is fast, powerful, not resource hog, protects Exim from direct connections and small-to-middle DoS on SMTP service.

Feel free to write your comments, bug reports, feature suggestions, etc.

If you wish to contribute to the development contact me via PM.

ASSP should be available on every cPanel server for FREE!

P.S. Installation service is also available if you unsure or wish to have guaranteed painless migration. Contact me via PM.

P.P.S. Admins, if you feel it cannot be considered as HOW TO move it to appropriate forum. However we think it may be considered so as script is open to read and follow all steps we do when installing ASSP and modifying it.

Proud is very apt - REALLY useful addon! Thank you. After getting ASSP installed, took less than 5 minutes to have the add-on setup.

Now for the feature requests icon_smile.gif (or just suggestions, for the next release possibly??):
1) Feature list integration - im really not sure how feature lists work - whether the addons directory is scanned, or whether each module needs to be compatible with this.
2) Enable "testmode" of various filters and setting of email commands on a per domain basis, instead of just enable / disable.

[edit] - still new to the software, just realised that a better way for this is to enable testing on a server-wide configuration through the web-administration. Once training is complete, then all domains start using filtering, rather than each domain doing its own testing.[/edit]

I think there may be a problem. In cPanel, if a check is disabled, it cannot be re-enabled in cPanel - click the "enable" link, get a message saying it has been enabled, but on status screen, still comes back as being disabled.

have tested this with delay and spf. (i see the "disable" function adds the domain to check_spam_lover files in rules, but doesnt remove them when the enable link is clicked).

I have already responded to you. It was additionally taken care of and 1.2.2 released. I guess your issue was caused by improper ASSP install as we reset permissions during ASSP install/update.

Excellent addon!

Just one thing...is it just me? or is the cpanel asspx icon not visable on the main page?
If i click something like "add/remove email accounts" then the asspx link shows on the side. From there, I can click "go back" to just the email menu and it shows there as well...just not on the main cpanel index.
I'm currently using rvskins.

Besides this one small issue, top notch! icon_smile.gif

Yes, ASSP X link is shown on Mail section. It is correct. However for RVSkin themese it is not shown on main Mail section because it should be integrated into RVSkin. We are currently working on this and if you mail RVSkin developers it may speed up integration process icon_smile.gif

Btw, ASSP X become more mature and installed on production systems for some time already. Feel free to ask me questions - we are interested in further ASSP X development to help its integration with cPanel/WHM.

Thanks for the explanation.

Just one other thing. dnsreport.com (and also hotmail) are showing me as an open relay. More detailed relay tests are unable to relay through me, but it is important to not be blacklisted by hotmail. Do you know of any way to fix this?
seadawg
Nevermind that last one, I found it for myself.
Under "Copy Mail", you have to leave "Catchall Address for Postmaster Mail" and "Catchall Address for Abuse Mail" blank.

It may be useful to make this the default setting.
boduk
I had a bit of a problem at first, but now it is resolved.
Thanx for this great addon.

Umm... Are you mean that having sendAllPostmaster & sendAllAbuse set cause Open Relay to be created?.. Could you confirm?

These settings do not actually create an open relay, but the problem is that some tests (such as dnsreport.com) detect it as an open relay. As far as the sending server is concerned, the recipient is accepted, but no mail is actually relayed.

Even though it does not create an open relay, I would suggest leaving these values blank by default, as hotmail uses the same type of open relay test and will silently drop all mail originating from the server, like they did to mine.

What MAN icon_surprised.gif . nice clone of assp deluxe icon_smile.gif . If you want try the orginal idea (not the free clone) with support , search for assp deluxe.
Gabriel icon_mrgreen.gif

No offense intended, Gabriel, but I will always opt for a 100% open source solution. If its a clone, then its a clone...sort of like Evolution is a clone of Outlook?
I really only use cpanel because of my customer base.

I've looked at ASSP Deluxe, and it does look very slick. So again, no offense intended icon_smile.gif

This is changed in 1.3.0 which is due to be released during these days.

Btw, do you know how to get rid of very serious problem with "lost while reading message data (header)" of Exim? Actually some messages just can't be sent! Sending host is a cPanel host and there is no delay, this refuse message is being sent by Exim almost instantly and remote host receive "closed connection in response to end of data". I have tried to clean Exim, re-install it but it may be ASSP issue, not Exim one so I wonder have anyone noticed that?

P.S. ASSP X is not a clone, it is developed in its own way and implementation is different, especially in our accuracy regarding all the ASSP settings. Just like "seadawg" said one may tell that Firefox is clone of Internet Explorer! icon_smile.gif

We use asspx but have serious problem with sending mail using cpanel server
Mail is delivered to remote mail serwer but got warings in mail clients

Second is that asspx use lot of resources - 100% of one of cpu (4 virtual) - in this time connecting to port 25 is impossible - timeout
Is it some way to make assp to use more processors ?

I don't think so. I believe assp is a single-threaded application, so it will only use 1 processor. I was getting a lot of timeouts as well, usually doing SPF lookups on yahoo groups emails for some reason. I get MUCH less after disabling SPF lookups.

I just tested my server at dnsreport.com and found that I failed the open relay test again. The sendallpostmaster and sendallabuse settings were both blank when I upgraded to 1.3.0, but when I checked just now (version 1.3.2), they were set again.

Did you change it back to the original settings? I don't see any indication of it in the changelog. Rather annoying to have to keep checking these 2 settings, especially with auto-update on.

What is very slick ? icon_mrgreen.gif icon_eek.gif

Remember that I provide support , a free clone cannot provide free support .
assp x only clones my ideas from the start of my project . 20 april I put on my web site.. "developing spambox@ plugin estimated release date 24 april" . 25 April assp x relase spambox@ icon_mrgreen.gif icon_mrgreen.gif icon_mrgreen.gif

Next time on my depelopment page I'll write "developing caffe" I want see if he can clone also that icon_mrgreen.gif !

It happened since my orginal/starting idea to use spamlovers.

Is it better a "Ferrari made in Italy" or a "Ferrari cloned amde in China" ?
Is it better a "Chianti made in Italy" or a "Chianti cloned" ?
Is it better a "Assp Deluxe made in Italy" or a "Assp X made in ?? " ?
Why do I have clients which are asking me to remove assp x for assp deluxe ?

There is something wrong with your assp configuration/installation or WHM/Cpanl settings . In most cases assp uses only a fraction of your cpu , rarely more than 10% or 20% . Over 30% of my clients installed it on a VPS , and it runs very well.

Gabriel! The last time I checked, this was a thread for ASSP X. Trashing asspx just to promote your own solution is very uncool, especially in a asspx thread! The reason I went with asspx instead of assp deluxe is because I saw this attitude of yours on other forums. Very unprofessional, and not the type of person I want to give my money to.
If you want to be successful with assp deluxe, you need to stop worrying about everybody else. If people want support, they will pay for your product, but you have to stop this petty crap right now! Nobody wants to pay a little kid for support, and that's what you are making yourself look like.

For a person developing an interface to a piece of open source software, you sure don't have an open source attitude.

As a side note, I make my own Chianti, and I rather like it icon_razz.gif

Now take your paid support and go play on your own side of the playground.

This ASSP proxy software was making me drool already... Now i come to find out its easilly installed on my cpanel boxes... Sweet!

Thanks for the information. Also to the non free developer- Learn to have more confidence in yourself and yoru product. If you p[rovide a good service and are proud of your offerring people will come based on tgheir impression of you as a business man. However pilfering around trying to sell a product of yours to people not interested annoys them and leaves a bad taste in peoples mouth who might buy it from you. Either personally I wish you all the best your product does look awesome!

I look forward to experiencing all the awesome reviews i have read of ASSP. Now if I only had another testbed server just lying around... ;-P

For those who don't know - ASSP X now support spambox just like SpamAssassin does! This means that when you disabled SpamAssassin and its SpamBox you may still enable it via ASSP X cPanel interface and continue having "spam" directory where all spam being sent to.
As result you won't trash important mails while all spam passed through will be sent to Spambox.

There is one comment: you need to disable single/all filters inside chosen domain AND enable Spambox to actually move "allowed to come in" spam to "spam" directory! Otherwise server-wide filters remove mail before it reach your Spambox. It may be a little bit confusing but it gives you the power to:
1) Accept only good mails to inbox (all filters enabled, spambox disabled);
2) Accept all mails, good & spam ones to inbox (all filters disabled, spambox disabled);
3) Accept all good mails to inbox, spam mails to spambox (all filters disabled, spambox enabled).

As you may see you may control either you wish to accept "spam" mails to your inbox or at your "spam" directory.
You also may decide not to accept mails from RBL blacklisted senders, so just keep filter enabled and all mails with failed RBL check won't be sent neither to spambox nor to inbox.

Hope it is clear enough.

We have started to use ASSP X on our corporate server and it works a way better than SpamAssassin with Exim tweaks and Boxtrapper (which is bad in terms of "forced response spam").

Any updates on support for the X3 theme?

This is a really nice, convenient add-on but I'm having a couple of problems:

When I go into the ASSP admin panel (not the cpanel menu) and change things the settings they save for a while - but I'll go back a few days later and everything is reset to the defaults. Also, the ASSP documentation says to do the test mode first, which I did for a while, and then to rebuild the bayesian database. The rebuild step didn't work for me. I don't remember now exactly what happened but I didn't have "400 emails correctly categorized" (about 150 or so) because the test mode settings aren't saving so I need to figure that out first.

I read your post only now . Did you ask yourlself who does start this play ?

I created assp deluxe , then someone started to clone my idea after 1 month and after that assp was never used on a cpanel server for years (using an add on) , and adversting his "free" product on my cpanel thread.

The idea was ... using spamlovers to install assp on a shared hosting server . This idea was never used since I started to use it with assp deluxe , never since assp was created several years ago.

So who does start this dirty play ?

And talking about "attitude" do you think that is an "open source software attitude" promoting the software saying that "my software is better because free and without tricks or whatever" ?. Do you have seen any kind of credit to my idea ? No , I have seen only "is better because free" . My compliments for this open source attitude. Behind this attitude , he is only trying to raise the google pagerank and web site popularity for his hosting website . That's all . So , should I be in silence ? Should I be in silence to be more professional and leave your eyes closed ? . However from my point of view my personal war with him has finished . From the end of May , assp deluxe if officialy supported by Fritz B., main assp developer (http://www.iworld.de/homes/fb/ASSP/S05DD62CB) , so I have no other to add.

Bye
ps. have you ever drunk a real bottle of Chianti and compared with your good wine tongue.gif ?

Credit for an idea? That's absurd.
I could understand credit for code, but since yours is closed-source, he wouldn't be using any of that either.

Forget it. I've tried complimenting you, and you act like a dick. I've tried criticizing you, and you act like a dick. As much as you may think that you're entitled to be the only person who can write an ASSP interface for Cpanel, that is just not how the world works.
Accept that, or find a new career path.
