Full Version: keepin' the servers AND the wife happy

Alright - this is most definitely an off topic conversation, however I can't imagine this is a situation that hasn't crossed the paths of at least some of you.

Does any one have any advice or personal experience to share for a sysadmin with a necessarily noisy nagios paging system, the ability to turn over a glance at a cell phone at 2am - determine if things really need your attention or if it's just the usual weekly spam bots causing your mail queue to whine - and fall back asleep with little sweat, but unfortunately piss off the wife/girlfriend/significant other next to you at the same time who has to go to their real job tomorrow morning !

I have known many men who have lived this elegant lifestyle before and somehow managed to make it through.

Com'on... can't be the only one! Can't all be sleepin on the couch!

Thanks icon_smile.gif hehe

My Wife sleeps through phone calls/pages/etc., so even if I do get called, I answer it, say one moment, and walk into the other room. icon_biggrin.gif
S3
I just show my wife the checks coming in and she likes it when my cell rings at 3am. icon_smile.gif

Was i the only one who read the subject and thought "omg spam!!1"?

(No I don't know of how to fix that. My wife gets woken up when my cell goes off too.)
Paul
I turn mine off at night. If something goes wrong, the planet monkies can fix it icon_razz.gif or failing that, call me on my other number.
doc
How often are you all getting calls at night? Everyday, 1 time a week?

Never icon_biggrin.gif since I started getting boxes from the planet over 3 years ago.

Ah yes, the good ol'BlackBerry going off at all hours of the night (support ticket notification / server alerts / etc).

But I'm in a similar case as S3. The GF is happy with the money the business is bringing in, and the flexibility that it brings. I have an added bonus though...it doesn't wake me up...it wakes her up, and she screens them for me. icon_wink.gif

Pretty much what I was thinking but didn't know how to put it.

Go get Skype.

www.skype.com and buy a number for like 10 bucks or something, and then forward your home calls to your skype number. This will make your home computer ring, and you can just use a headset. wink.gif

wear a headset while I sleep. No thanks. My body requires that I sleep from 12am to 6am everyday with no interruptions.

Put the phone/pager on vibrate and sleep with it under the covers;)

Get rid of the wife. That's only way I know to keep women happy....not have them around.

Haha - I was thinking about posting that same response when this thread first started but I thought I would get yelled at :-)

Maybe train the wife in server management and have her work on it in the middle of the night.

That's ok, I don't think I could stand working without having my wife there as a buffer after work icon_biggrin.gif

I've gotten my wife through a RedHat install, but, she still has a lot of work before I would trust her as 'Help' with any servers.
facecake
blackberry, elstic band, top of the arm. i'm sure that'd work.

Just tell your better half to be thank ful that they don't have the joys of my phones going off

2 Cells, one playing the Nokia Tune, which coincidentaly, should be reserved for voice calls or sms messages relating to server down messages / issues
1 Cisco7971 (ctu tone of course!)
1 Phone in the room next door going off like the clapers

and i still seem to sleep through it now and again....

I put the CTU tone on my CISCO IP phone and my cell phone - though when it goes off in public places you sometimes get some odd "where is Bauer?" looks :-D
