Hello...

I have planned downtime (notified my clients 2 weeks before) and started at 1000 GMT but now, halfway through the upgrade process, the RHN mirrors at The Planet go offline. I have had this problem before and suspect it's because they are being resynchronised but if they could be make the update at different times so that they are available at all times that would be great!

They came back at about 10:40ish so was able to complete pretty much within my maintenance window.

Would it possible to have a redundant set-up for the RHN mirrors?
NetMaster
I often see the mirror to be down at night. I asked TP about it but no one knew the answer. So I switched to do the updates during the day as I have fewer problems accessing it at that time.

Our RHN satellite server is doing system maintenance routines and backup tasks around that time every night. I believe the process begins around 5am our time. However, it usually doesn't take more and an hour or so complete. Unfortunatly, while these tasks are running, no one is able to access our RHN network if they are registered to the sattelite or through our proxies.

Thanks for the reply Ryan.

I understand that they have to update at some time but would it not be possible to stagger the updates? I have just hit the same problem this morning too. 10am UK time is pretty inconvenient (I'm not sure how many UK customers you have but I imagine it's quite a few with the dollar disparity).

I don't, however, know the eccentricities of managing a RHN mirror so it might be something which is out of the question...but it would be nice icon_smile.gif

Thanks again.

Can't you have 2 in failover and run the maintenance at different times?

IMO, as long as its transparent that the RHN servers go down for maintenance from X:XX to Y:YY, then there should be no need to put in another RHN server to cover for that downtime. Its an uneccesary added cost that goes to customers.
Jeff
But it's obviously not transparent:

Well, thats why this is a suggestions forum.

I'm sorry - I don't understand your first post above I guess.

I got some more information out of our Information Systems team, and this is the response they gave me:

QUOTE
We perform automated, scheduled maintenance on our RHN Satellite server each morning starting at 4:00am CDT.  During this time, access to the internal RHN satellite and proxies are unavailable.  While this maintenance typically takes less than 30 minutes to complete, we recommend allowing at least one hour to ensure the maintenance has completed in it's entirity.  Unfortunately, due to the nature of the work involved, we are unable to stagger this process.  In addition, due to a significant number of factors, adding secondary Satellite capabilities to our existing RHN topology would not be feasible at this time.

I hope this answers some of your questions/concerns.

Ok, thanks for the reply. I'll just remember not to touch the servers during that time icon_biggrin.gif

And try not to stay beyond your bed time. icon_lol.gif wink.gif
