Full Version: Orbit / General Questions from a new user
The Planet Forums > System Administration > Server Hardware

First off, I browsed the forum list twice, and although there is a fourm for total control servers, and another for the insomnia line, there isn't one for servermatrix... so that's why I'm posting here.

I'm the new owner of a SM Super Server 3.2, and very pleased. I totally understand you get what you pay for, and if the answer to any of these questions would be that's on the total control line, i understand.. I just don't wanna miss out on a feature that I could be using.

First, I noticed that a difference between the ValueExtreme servers and the Super Servers was this:
"Reboot-On-Demand" as opposed to "Manual reboot requests". I understand in orbit, i can request manual reboot requests here: https://orbit.theplanet.com/nav_support/a5_...ot_request.html, and so I would assume I could preform a reboot-on-demand here: https://orbit.theplanet.com/nav_hardware/re...management.html However, when I visit that page, I get the following message "No Servers Found or Provisioned at this time." Is this just a listing typo on this page(http://www.servermatrix.com/products/details.html?id=0E74EDC9997E3FC32D1434A409DBFCB6 under "Free Orbit Customer Control Portal") or am I on the wrong page in Orbit?

Secondly, does this topic: http://forums.theplanet.com/viewtopic.php?t=12637 apply to ServerMatrix servers, or just Total Control ones. The changes to grub.conf stated in that faq were already applied on my server, and i added the other inittab and securetty. In addition, how do I connect to that remote console? Would that be done through an interface in Orbit?

Third, we have a NAS backup, and I can smbmount it very nicely. However, under https://orbit.theplanet.com/nav_services/na...nas_backup.html it says "Currently there are no NAS backup services associated with this account. If you feel this is an error, please open a support ticket. You may order NAS backup service by visiting our Product Offering section of our website." Of course I can open a ticket, but if this isn't a problem, I just thought i'd ask here first. Also, how can I change the password of my NAS account?

Lastly, right now our server only has ping montering. When we want to add service montering (which is supported under the silver plan that SM has), do we just use this page: https://orbit.theplanet.com/nav_services/mo...ng_request.html ? It's a rather confusing page because we already have the silver plan, but the wording in the directions makes it sound like we'd be buying something new rather than just editing our current plan.

Sorry for all the questions. I normally consider myself pretty web savvy (that's what i'm here.. lol) but i found orbit somewhat confusing to use for the first time. Like, all i wanted to do was add an email contact when a server goes down. Took forever to find the one link titled "Edit Hostgroup Contacts". I searched, but couldn't find a quick faq for how to do simple things in orbit. If there's one out there, that'd be great. Else I might write one up once I fully understand how to do everything in it.

Thanks,

Andrew

Wow! That is a lot of research and a very comprehensive post. I am a customer here too so I will try to understand as many of your questions to the best of my knowledge.

1) "Reboot On Demand" and "Manual Reboot". I believe it was late 2004 where they had plans to install Reboot on Demand features with their customized hardware, some servers do have them but after running some issues now with the newer hardware, that project was put at the backburner. So some older hardware for the Servermatrix hardware has it, Total Control Servers have it as part of their hardware but I doubt the ValueExtreme Servers has anything in that respect as they are the scaled down version of whatever they are offering.

Typically, you should try doing a remote reboot and if that fails, a manual reboot can be ordered. It should not take more than 30 minutes to get it resolved, waiting for fscking to complete if necessary may take a little longer. The good thing is that The Planet uses very good hardware so unless you are messing around with the software, you probably do not need to order more than 1 hard reboot in a year.

2) Ignore the Grub thing because this would be for the Total Control hardware.

3) As for NAS, if you just got your server, chances are they are still doing the back-end paperwork and setting the monitors. But of course a ticket to them would be nice.

4) As for the Monitoring, some people opt not to have any management for their system for whatever reasons. So if you elected for the Silver Plan, you can set up the PING monitor and select which services you want it to monitor.

Hope that helps

Thank you VERY much for your reply eddy. It answered a lot of the questions I had.

On a side note to someone from The Planet, you should edit this page http://www.servermatrix.com/products/detai...D1434A409DBFCB6 (and reallly all the server matrix servers). If the new servers ordered aren't able to hardware support Reboot on Demand, you shouldn't be advertising to new customers that the function is avilable.

Lastly, is the DLLSTX6 datacenter the one that's shown in this (http://www.theplanet.com/facilities/tour/index.html) picutre?

Finally, I just want to say I spent a lot of time researching all the different dedicated server hosts out there. Obviously uptime (and connectivity) is the biggest factor from a hosting point of view, and of course price is always a factor from the business pov. TP brings on a great balance of both words. Having only been with TP for a few days, I'd recommend them to anyone based mostly of how so many other hosting providers fall oh so short in the support department. No one gives $.02 about support when everything is working dandy, but when something hits the fan in the middle of heavy traffic, it's good to know TP is there to fix it. (*fix it = hardware issue.)

Yeah, it seems like only yesterday but I've been here for over 3 years now. That's the longest I've ever been with a datacenter and there is no plans on my part to leave this place any time soon. I am not a person who stands on loyalty when it comes to business, I will move if circumstances require me to do so but so far The Planet offers the best value for my money, very stable network and hardware so that's why I am still here.

They are far from perfect but if you look over those little "bugs", you do fine.

Reboot on Demand is still available on many servers. However, you have one of the newer lines. I'm not completely sure if it was deployed on the newer 3.2 machines. I will have to check into it.

That picture contains the DLLSTX2 datacenter.
