Full Version: Cheapest way to "switch" servers...

Currently, I have 2 servers on one account here at SM. One is a dualXeon that is the "better" box of the 2.

I now find that I can totally throw all the domains on that server out...ie I have no need for this "better" box....

Can I...

On the better box:
- do a complete server OS reload
- then move ALL domains etc from the poorer box to this server

And the poorer box: cancel that one...ie get rid of the worst of the 2...

So my questions are...

1] how do I do this? or do I ask support to do this and if so is there a charge for this 'switching' of servers?

2] how long would such a change take to do if I do it with 60 domains to move...

Well, the tech doesn't do the transfer for you so it is pretty much what you are supposed to be doing yourself.

Since it is pretty close to the cut-off date for the end of the month billing, you need to decide fast on what you want to do.

Personally, I think if the 'poorer' box can handle all your domains as it is then just keep it and surrender the 'better' box. Then you do not need to worry about the move, pay for the OS reload and miss the dateline for cancellation and when you do that, you will save a bundle of money icon_smile.gif Then when you need more performance then get a newer better machine so you have more time to pace the transfers.

As for the moving of 60 domains, it depends on several factors like what Control Panel is it using ? If it is based on CPanel/WHM, you can use the WHM move to transfer all the sites over, probably a few minutes to a few hours, depending on how big the sites are. You need to however take care of the DNS issue while you are at it.
