could someone please tell me the difference between a master or slave dns please.

The idea is that one would manage DNS zones on the master name server, and any new zones and changes will automatically replicate to the slave name server.

You have a master plus one or more slave name servers for redundancy -- if one is unreachable then the other can still resolve your domain names. The master and slave name servers should be on separate physical servers, preferable even geographically separated. However, in the world of reseller hosting, it is common practice to have the master and slave name servers set up on the same box :shock:

These days, with control panels like cPanel (and I guess Plesk too), one really manages all the name servers simultaneously. So it is not really case of master that replicates to slave name server anymore, but rather just first and second (and third etc. if you have) name servers.
