Full Version: Second hard drive to improve hard disk IO

We have a server that is working very hard sending a huge mailing list on a weekly basis( no it not SPAM icon_twisted.gif ) It seems to me the biggest bottleneck is disk IO when the mail spool grows large. I have done the hard drive optimization in WHM, set noatime, etc, but the iowait still hovers above 50%.

I am thinking of getting a second hard drive, and then moving all or part of the mail queue there. This should improve the overall disk IO. For best performance, I believe the second drive should not be on the same IDE channel as the first.

So this brings me to my question: Can our Super Server 3.2 (ordered about a month ago) accomodate a second hard drive on the secondary IDE channel (i.e. hda and hdc)? Our other servers all seem to have both their hard drives on the primary channel (hdb hdb).

Why dont you just send them in batches?
x amount every hour?

I have a SS2.8 and it has 2 x 40GB as hda and hdb.

I am using ListMailPro and submitting in batches of 2,500. ListMailPro basically keeps on submitting emails as fast as Exim is willing to accept them. The process is very stable, except that Exim is getting increasingly slower as the queue grows with time.

The server load hovers around 5, which is OK for the purpose. The problem is clearly to high iowait.
