Hi,
I'm thinking about purchasing a TCS with RAID1 and was wondering that if one of the HDD's crashed, would this not effect the system at all and it would automatically just continue to run off the remaining HDD? And how much will performance suffer from RAID1?
Thanks

The only piece of hardware that knows there are 2 drives is the controller. Everything is ran as if it was a single hard drive system, but when a request to READ or WRITE a file, the controller sends a duplicatte signal to the other drive. Occasionally it checks to make sure both drives are 1:1 so if one would fail - you'd never know it happened.
Now, you WOULD know it happened because you can use the controller's software to notify you if a problem happens, but your performance wouldn't be degraded.

During rebuilds, your performance would be degraded. Mostly on writing though, but you will see it on reading also since you only have 1 drive to read from instead of 2 (the better raid controllers will share the reads across disks to help performance)
