This is the first of several exciting announcements to be made over the next couple of months...
The Planet has acquired 72,000 square feet of additional data center space in Dallas. The initial phase includes 30,000 square feet of finished Tier 1 datacenter and support space. The new facility has more than $14 million in datacenter improvements with future capacity for 36,000 servers.
The acquisition of this facility is the first step in The Planet’s plans to deliver new industry-leading product offerings, details of which will be announced soon.
The new facility features an industry leading N+2 level of redundancy including:
• Dual electrical utility feeds from separate TXU substations
• One 2-megawatt diesel generator
• Parallel redundant 750KVA MGE UPS
• Dual 550 ton carrier chillers
• Double interlock pre-action fire suppression
• Multiple levels of physical security
“We are pleased to have the space, bandwidth, and power to meet the increasing demand for The Planet’s offerings,” said Steve Wallace, vice president of operations. “The additional datacenter space will allow The Planet to offer our customers the ability to scale with us as their businesses grow.”
The Planet has substantially grown its datacenters in the last 17 months, increasing space more than 200,000 square feet. In January of 2005, The Planet opened a new 51,000 square foot Tier 1 datacenter at the INFOMART in Dallas. In May of 2004, the company also added 21,000 square feet, opening another $8 million state-of-the-art datacenter in Dallas.

Since it took them about 6 weeks to fill up the last one, this should last for about a month or so

Hopefully this will relax some of the requirements for co-lo hosting (which I'm seriously starting to consider)
Love to do a 1U or 2U machine but can't under current requirements - but ya never know!

Just curious - what will a 1u or 2u colocated machine offer you that a total control server doesn't offer for less money/month?

In 2U, I could fit 8x 400gig drives....
I dont see that as an option for TC Boxes unless they added it recently.

Back when servermatrix still did Co-lo, I was able to send it a nicely decked out machine and I got a good savings on it at $50/mo. They doubled the price to $100/mo a while back, but they also increased the bandwidth allotment, so it's still a pretty good deal.
I don't think there's much benefit to colocating a low-end machine, unless like you already have a cabinet or something.

Oh this won't be low-end by any stretch of the imagination. But my only question is, are they or will they allow single machine colo hosting again in the future. If they don't/can't, then I'll put this on the back burner for the moment. It would be a nice-to-have, but not a nessity.

Depending on what you want nForcer, i could prob colo it for you....

It just depends on how much you are wanting and willing to spend.

While this new facility allows growth, we still have a lot of customers occupying the existing D2 facility. I don't see single colo spaces as being available in the very near future here. I don't want to be negative, but just a heads up so you can plan accordingly as well.
I'm sure you can find a solution through one of our existing products.

Mar 9 2006, 03:34 PM
I'm sure I could, but it would be nice since I already have a server for such a purpose, running in my basement, and wouldn't have to spend as much per month for an equivelant machine from you guys.
Hogie, I wouldn't need anything more than what typical SM servers use as far as bandwidth. 100Mbit port and 1 Tera a month would probably work - just thinking off the top of my head. My problem is, I burst in excess of 60-70Mbits once or twice a day for maybe 10-15 minutes, and the rest is sub-5 Mbit, and the current TP colo calculation would kill me. That's why I've not given in a whole lot of thought.
I am keeping your offer in mind though

well each week that past by, since the 'sell-out' point - you can assure there would be another 750 requests for machines. By my math, that means it won't take much more than a couple months if all the variables stayed constant!
They really need a football arena sized area to run everything at the rate they're expanding!

for some reason i dont see 72,000 square feet cutting it

, you guys should add a 0 to the end of that

The new space is not quite full yet.

We had our first server deployed there on Wednesday. There's plenty more servers available, so go order a few.

I have to admit, I like how this company grows so fast they cannot keep up...at least they are doing well.
And in the process, they upgrade our bandwidth.
Cannot ask for too much more.
