I got one of those deals at the end of 2004 for a p4-2.4 but got a free upgrade to a p4-2.8
screenshot to prove it:
http://www.peterissa.com/pics/sm_server-specs-whm.jpg
(turn off web browser image autoresize if you have it enabled to avoid text illegibility)
"Silver" package
512mb DDR Ram
80gb wd800jb(7200rpm,8m)
cPanel with WHM
1200 bandwidth
I pay only $119/mo
including cPanel and WHM!!
(was originally $99 setup)
I
(now) ask
$50 for me to transfer the server to you. And if you want me to pay the Orbit/Planet $75 transfer fee then add $75 to that $50, or you can pay them the transfer free of $75 and me the $50 I ask.
Paypal only please. Existing servermatrix/planet customers only.
If no takers then I will be cancelling this server on 2-21-06.

well, since no one interested so far I can only assume some might be put off by my $100 fee.
So since there's still 24hours before i cancel, I'm gonna knock it down to $50 for me, $75 for planet transfer fee...

wow. You might wanna knock down the $50 for you part. $50 to create a ticket is pretty expensive, plus most offers around here go for no additional cost, just the transfer fee. Yet those members don't need to charge "for their time".

Ok- well, thanks for your input. But I do not see why a paid professional as myself would offer a "rent controlled" deal like this to a stranger for free.
Its not like I am just dumping a recently leased server at todays higher servermatrix rates.
From what I have seen this is a good deal including cpanel for a servermatrix server compared to todays offerings from servermatrix. If people cannot do the math and realize how much money jumping on this would save them in yearly costs comparatively then thats their perogative. I would just as soon cancel the server if its not going to make me a dime to help someone out by transfering a value like this to them.
Its simple economics. I'm in business to make money, not to give away a 2 years ago sale priced contract for nothing.

My observation is that it is a 2 year old hardware and the RAM on the machine is 512mb instead of the standard 1gb RAM now. So to bring it up to the current configuration, you need to pay an additional $20/mth to do so. This will raise the monthly fees to $119(vanilla plain server). Thus the savings is $20/mth. Yes, I wouldn't say there isn't a saving here.
The only thing is that there is an additional capital outlay of $75 (Transfer) + $25 (OS Reload) + $50 (for your time) = $150 as opposed to paying the $99 now.
I did consider getting a P4 2.8 earlier but went ahead to getting the Althon 3200+ instead since it is newer, cheaper and supposedly faster than the 2.8.
In any case, you have nothing to lose by offering the server for transfer for free since you were prepared to give it up anyways which would also yield you nothing.
The last server I gave up for transfer a few days ago, I spend an additional $400 for an additional 1gb RAM 6 months ago and 160gb additional Diskspace and more than $100/mth cost savings per month. I did recoup a portion of the cost I paid for the additional harddisk and was a good buy.

And thats why I dropped it from $100 to $50 since I have nothing to lose anyway as you say. And it WILL take time and effort for me to transfer it and coordinate with a taker. Which, no I won't do for free.
Hey- I know athlonXP and 64s are going cheap now. But some people "love" intel.
Anyway, I appreciate your input. IF someone sees the savings they can have by this deal, then good for them, but If I get no takers I have lost nothing. As you pointed out it will save someone $20 a month. If someone is an established long time customer of servermatrix they will most likely keep the server at least a year and will make back their investment on the takeover plus some profit over the current rates.

Have you actually done a transfer before ? On the seller part, all you need to do is to go to Orbit and under the Hardware tab, click on the Hardware Transfer Administration
https://orbit.theplanet.com/nav_hardware/a6...e_transfer.html
Your only input as a seller is to enter 3 items, the recipient Customer ID then click on the server you want to transfer and click on the radio button of who would pay for the transfer fees. After the submission, you will have no more part to the server. Everything from that point onwards is between The Planet and the new owner. That's where the new owner's job gets hard, he needs to confirm the transfer, go get an OS reload and settle everything that needs to be done with Accounting. The password, IP address and all that to the server would be sent from The Planet through the 'Welcome to Servermatrix' email. The only coordination at that point would be how the new owner is going to pay you.
I've transferred 4 servers away and 1 server towards me in the past 2 years. During that time, I've pretty much transfer some of the servers for free.
In any case, if there is no takers, just drop the server.

Your right it was, but thats why I editted it. I am just sick of seeing people unwilling to do anything as an act of kindness. I am glad where I am from people are still think of kindness.
Sadly in a lot of places society has changed horribly.
Example:
Mikes choking
George says, "You want me to help? $50 please".

This is business. I don't know you or anyone else here. I don't believe any of you are charity cases therefore I am not offering free services.

Your right, what was I thinking
Someone could buy into this transfer from BIGFOOT_PI
$119 a month + $20 for 512 ram + $125 setup = $244
Or you could buy it new
$139 a month (1 gb ram incl) + $99 setup = $238

Hey! Be civil here. Most of us have been here for a while and have created a form of bonding with each other. We are amongst friends and business is not always about making money. An act of kindness here and there may reap you certain benefits in the future.
I developed software and I did give a couple of licenses for free to people here, I know they can pay but hey, it is not always about the money. In turn, I come here asking questions about how to do certain things for my servers and I get help from people who did not ask me for money.
Business is about give and take and if you have nothing to lose, there is no worries. But yes, everyone has their free will and you can do anything you like. If no one deals with you, don't take it to heart, it is only business.

Well, actually it is only out of stock to new customers and existing customers can acquire them through Orbit. I was being offered the P4 2.8 or the Althon 3200+ and I got the Althon and that was like on the 17th Feb (last friday). I think there is a pile of old P4 2.8 around. The Althon is newer and they do not have as many in stock. I went for the Althon because it is cheaper, newer and faster.
If you were opening the offer to new customers, probably it could attract more interest because they can't get it.

Have you taken the time to check out the Hardware Transfer page in Orbit
https://orbit.theplanet.com/nav_hardware/a6...e_transfer.html
The instruction to transfer to a new customer is there and the information you require from them. They will welcome both new and old customers as long as The Planet gets paid the $75 transfer fees and someone pays for the monthly fees of the new customers. I believe it gets a bit more complex for the new customer since they would need to be authenticated but it is a small deal.

In any case, it might already be too late to find someone. Next time if you want to stage a transfer do it at the middle of the month. Then arrange to do the transfer before the end of the month.

Now to think of it, you could put in the cancellation note for the server now before you miss the 22nd dateline. Then open up another post somewhere to offer your server again, this time to anyone. Then as long as you initiate the transfer before the end of the month and that you revoke the cancellation order like I did before the end, it should still work. At least, that's what Sales told me.
All the best. Maybe this time don't mention an amount you want, just keep it open to negotiation. Something is better than nothing but then if you get nothing, you are not losing anything.
Just a note, once you initiate the transfer, you will no longer have the right to the machine so transfer everything out before you do that. Reload or change of ownership can happen any time. The last time I took over a transferred server, when the transfer process being, the hardware will appear on both parties' Orbit and as the new guy, I got hold of the password and access to the machine.

You are absolutley correct about the irony. We can all thank Jmweb for that. But I don't consider charging for my time silly. And to all you people that think you should be able to have someones $20/mo cheaper than current offerings server transferred to you for free then this isn't for you anyway.

I was going to post at WHT but according to their rules I haven't posted there enough to be allowed to offer up anything yet. No big deal though. This was a last minute thing so its no big deal either way. I was more concerned with getting my customers tranferred to the new server successfully. Offering this up was an afterthought based on a suggestion from an associate.
