Full Version: Are my servers rootkit'd ?
The Planet Forums > Security > General Security > UNIX Security
MasterChief
Please look at this and tell me if I have rootkits installed or these are false alarms. I have 2 servers and both are locked down with apf and BFD with latest patch level.

Thanks.
Shadi

I would say the box is comprimised
Blue|Fusion
The first box is compromised. The second box is normal for RHEL3u6 because the databases haven't been updated for one of the newest packages from RHN.
MasterChief
I cannot reload OS at this point in time. Is there a cleanup procedure or utility for the 3 rootkits ?

Thanks.
klaude
Once the server has been compromised all data on it should be treated as suspect. You need to get an OS reload then restore your most recent backups.
PatrickES
Even on server 2 I myself would say it's compromised.

The "login" file is throwing a red flag, so you may never know when a particular user logs on or not. "dmesg" are some of your system messages, that's throwing up a red flag too.

Check your /etc/passwd see if theirs any suspicious accounts in their.

But IMO Server 1 I would say IS compromised.

Provided server 2 has been upgraded to update 6, it is normal for those 4 items to be bad as Blue|Fusion mentioned above.
xenneo
I would look into The Planet OS Hardening after you get an OS relead, they do a really good job on it icon_smile.gif.
Ronny AcuNett
I would not look at the MD5 checksums. The only thing useful with RKHunter in a redhat system is pretty much it's rootkit checker. I've spoken with the script writer personally.
