I currently have a Windows 2003 server upon which I setup two nameservers and have used them for all my domain names. However, I thought I remember reading that using the Planet nameservers was a better thing to do. I just signed up for another server (Redhat) and I'm not sure setting up the nameservers is going to be as easy. So I'm thinking about using the Planet nameservers. Is this a better route to go?

It depends on your needs really. Run your own DNS server if you need absolute control over your zones and want to be able to reload zones whenever you want. Use ours if you only need a fancy web interface to your zone and can wait for our automated zone reloads to go through.

So if I don't really know what zones are or why I would need absolute control over them, I should stick with the planet nameservers? Sounds like what I want.

Thats probably best then. Our DNS server interface takes much of the nitty gritty out of domain records.
A DNS zone file is a file that contains the actual DNS to IP mappings along with things like MX records, SOA, and the like. DNS servers use these zone files to determine what records translate when they are queried.

Right. I submitted a request and it went through. Looks like all the records I need are setup by TP and I should be all set using this default configuration. So now I just need to submit a ticket for each domain name I host and then change each domains nameserver. Then after everything resolves, I should be all set. That sound right?

Sounds good! You'll only need to submit tickets to get the domains added to our servers. Once they're there you can manage them directly through Orbit.
