Im guessing the chances of the hurricane being a real problem are slim....
having lived in htown for many years I realize galveston is a good few miles away... even though, Im running a few extra offsite backups for my houston located servers.

Where are your houston servers held? I thought all of the Planet's datacenters were located in Dallas which is well out of the zone of any normal hurricane ... I think ... I hope...

He didnt say they were planet servers.
I've got server's in houston also, nothing that doesnt get backed up nightly though.

If I remember right, pretty much most data centers are in Texas, ServerBeach, ServerMatrix et al, EV1, Rackspace, the list goes on... Sure they have data centers all over (or not) but Texas is a great place because A) Land is cheap B) All major bandwidth providers service there C) the land is safe from earthquakes (I think I read that) and D) for the most part the weather is not tooo life threating (nothing some A/C can't fix...

To give people a idea of how far away Dallas is from any hurricane except for maby a category 5(which is the highest that i know of) We are Talking doomsday level here to reach Dallas. I have provided this nice map. (courtesy of google.)
http://imagedump.net/sep/ppgn.gif

about the only thing threating the planet datacenter is a tornado. (they happen but usualy in fort worth area) Or a Severe thunderstrom.

You forgot E it is central which makes nationwide speed better. Having it central means that the data does not have to travel from one coast to another.

Ive been told that D2 is a able to withstand a class 5 hurricane anyway.... The building would still be up, but I dont know about the big glass window in the front. I do know if something was coming to D2 that big, with that much warning, I would go get my important machine out of my colo... My xbox. I could never let it get hurt...

Don't want to panic but...
Seems like it will really be going it's way over Dallas....
Check the map here:
http://www.weather.com/?from=globalnav
I have a backup on another box here at ServerMatrix but now...
I am really looking for a quick distant backup solution.
Sounds like if ServerMatrix gets hit (which I really don't hope for the staff and us),
then... my backup server won't be of any use.
Anyone knows if the
NAS Backup Solution
is located a bit more North, off Dallas?
Cheers,

Dont quote me on it, but afaik... by the time the storm reaches in as far as dallas there is not enough windcurrent from the ocean waters for a powerful storm. Hurricanes lessen in power the further away from the coast/air disturbance that they travel.

Well let's hope for the best, that SM lives up to it's protection promises

I'm almost less worried about their buildings and more about the Bandwidth providers :o

Once the hurricane hits land it'll lose mose of its power. By the time it gets to the Austin area it'd be the power of a small tropical storm. By the time it gets to Dallas it'll be nothing but rainstorms (according to the local weathermen anyways) and give us some much needed rain.
gordon: According to the news they're telling folks in low level and costal areas in Houston to evacuate. Hotels in Dallas are giving 75-85% discounts for folks from your area. Come on up!

Im sorry, you were fed wrong information....
I was doing my first solo cross country flight today from GPM to CRS (Corsicana), and as I was heading back toward Arlington (GPM is in Grand Prairie, a city by Arlington), I got passed by a gulfstream 5, with the call sign Golf Echo Echo Kilo 1 (GEEK1). That was him hauling ass to higher ground...

Dont take it too lightly. I live in West Tennessee and Katrina's eye went over us and we were under a Tropical storm warning (a very abnormal thing to hear issued for this area) and it packed 50+ mph wind gusts, caused power outages, trees down, etc.
I can tell you we sure didnt think it would do all of that up here, and we are further away from the coast than Dallas is from their coast

We aren't taking it lightly where I work. Before I went and flew today, We had an "emergency" meeting about disaster recovery, etc, etc. Thursday we are backing EVERYTHING up to our 140gig DLT drive (both locally, and what's at the planet), and I am personally holding onto those until everything's over.
There was even talks about someone staying @ D2 when the storm hits... I think I got them talked out of that.
I do hope everyone leaves the coastal area this time...

They really should upgrade the category scale. Category 5 used to be the fastest, but then we had category 5e, and then category 6. And we cannot forget about single mode and multimode fiber…

I just saw that the Hurricane has slowed to Cat4. The Texas High Pressure ridge is no longer there to keep the storm tight and together. It is only a matter of time before the hurricane starts to break apart. I live in Florida about 30 Min. from Tampa Bay...Last year was crazy here. I learned more about weather last year then the weather man... LOL (Like they know anything anyway). Don't get me wrong though, I'm not saying to take it lightly, I am just saying that the hurricane will break fast and hard when it makes land fall. If there is one thing I learned last year, it is - if you're on the coast.....GET OUT!
