I have not long ago setup my first dedicated server through The Planet, and have a few questions on DNS etc.
The situation is this: The server belongs to a large international client (I rented it for them) and I am setting up their website on it.
When I applied for the server I used their current domain (e.g www.client.com) which became the root of the server. I then created a master.client.com to be the root and created an account through WHM and made that the www.client.com account, so that they will have their own cpanel etc. (first question, was this necessary?)
I can’t delegate their domain over to the server yet, as they can’t have their current site down during development, so I registered a new domain through The Planet (e.g www.client-dev.com) as a development platform. I then created another account through WHM for this domain. I could not for the life of me figure out how to get any of this working, as I assumed I would need to point this domain to ns1.theplanet.com etc, but the orbit domain admin area doesn’t let you do this. It only lets you point them to ns1.theplanetdomains.com or externally. (I ended up getting the planet to setup the domain for me.. and when I look at the records etc, I have no idea what they have done)
I have heard I can setup my own Nameservers through the new server, and point domains to it. (Q#2 how do I do this with out the server having a delegated domain yet? I don’t want to break anything
Anyway so after client-dev.com was setup, I tried to create a subdomain through cpanel to point to a certain area.. but it never works.
(a note here: The new website will be running under the CMS EzPublish, so I wanted to have admin.client-dev.com point to the admin node of ezpublish, which by default is www.client-dev.com/index.php/client_admin) it says it worked.. but the domain never exists.
These are I suppose the basics of what I want to setup, I have another temp domain I am going to use for testing purposes, so that’s not a problem. Any advice on getting all this working would be much appreciated, then I can start learning some of the other functions of cpanel and whm.
Cheers
