Full Version: My First Load Balanced Server Solution
The Planet Forums > System Administration > Load Balancing

Hello,

I am in need of a load balanced server for a very high traffic website where one server just does not cut it anymore, and downtime is not really an option. I needed two load balanced servers with a hardware load balancer.

Here is what The Planet Quoted me...

Anyways, I have never dealt with a load balanced server, and frankly barely know how to even use a regular dedicated server (I can do the basics). I've had my own server for 3-4 months now, but I have a few admins that do all the setup and hard work.

I really want to move to a load balanced solution but I have NO idea how to setup the two load balanced servers, and NO idea how to setup the mysql database on the shared mysql server which is running on windows.

So basically I need someone that will do it all for me. I would like to have everything setup so that I can just, well, update my name servers with my registrar, and upload all my data to a single server. Basically I do not want to do any of the dirty work.

Can somebody recommend a server admin company that can offer the full 9 yards here...

Thanks,
Jason

I just thought I'd point this out...

You realize that shared DB space you ordered is MSSQL and not MySQL, right? If that's actually what you intended, you'd install Microsoft Enterprise Manager on your server and access the shared space from there.

Hello,

How would I do it when I am running Linux with cPanel?
Blue|Fusion
If you're running a linux/cpanel server, you do not need MSSQL. MySQL is automatically installed on cPanel servers.

And so you know, you might be better off splitting up services between servers, rather than hardware load balancing. If your site has alot of MySQL queries, you might be better off having MySQL on a seperate server than the rest of the services. Even get 3 or 4 servers running different services.

It's actually easier to do, IMHO...and cheaper.

EDIT:
If you do go the non-hardware load balanced way, than you will still want to order all of the servers at the same time that you will require and get a switch to connect them all together on a LAN.

But that wouldn't provide redundancy that a hardware load balancer receives right?
Blue|Fusion
No, it would not offer redundancy like a hardware load balanced solution.
Jason Benn
Okay,

Well does anybody know of some admins that can fully setup load balancers...etc. as listed in my first post?

Yes, The Planet can do this for you. Just submit a request or call one of thier sales reps and explain what you need.

Hello,

Actually The Planet told me themself that they can not provide any help in setting up everything, and referred me to this board to find help finding an admin that could help icon_sad.gif

Jason, give me a call tomorrow at my office. 972 641 0077, just ask for Daniel Harris. I usually dont get in until 9 - 10am central time, but since we have a new tech, I have to be there earlier tomorrow. We can discuss the options you have, and what you might have not thought of. Or you can also email me at daniel@dfwgroup.com, and I can call you so you dont have to call long distance (I dont remember our 800 number off the top of my head, except for our gsp, and its voice prompts are kinda broken right now).

Alteon 180e - $595/mo $595/setup

besides we need to pay for each server?

is this the only avaiable LOAD balancing offer that the planet provide to their customers?

Buy the servers pay them 2 servers at least 600 dolars
Pay 595 setup and 595 each month for load balancing?

total cost to a dual xeon load balanced pair= 200 setup for servers 595 setup for load balancing= 795 setup Plus 520 for servers plus 595 for load balanced= 1115 dolars monthly
wow

Wow, where to begin.

*Your first post so I know you didn't actually read the entire thread or you find out it was posted ...
*Back in Aug and a LOT has changed since then. So much so that
*They (TP) are restricting new setups to a VERY limited amount in which what you listed is the only one offered, however
*If you call and ask, they are more than willing to work with you on a solution to fit your needs and pricing structure which, again,
*Your figures are incorrect.

and it should be noted there are a NUMBER of individuals (even some forum members) who are paying FAR more than $1,200/mon.
