Full Version: What is the best solution for a COD UO and Nascar server?

Howdy all,

Currently we run a 20 slot public and a 14 slot private COD UO server with a seperate server for Ventrillo. After having issues with lag on the 2 UO servers and not getting any responses, we thought it time to just get our own box. After much searching with still no real answers, I wonder if I could ask this community for advice on what is the best deal for us.

What we would like to be able to run, would be a 24 slot public, 14 slot private UO server, 25 slot Ventrillo and a 20 slot Nascar 2003 Racing Season server. Have no idea what sort of power we would need to run all these without any lag issues. We were looking at the deal from Insomnia for the $139.00 (P-4 2.8Ghz, 512 ram.....we would upgrade to 1 gig) or the $179.00 (P-4 3.2Ghz, 1gig Ram), with the upgraded 100Mbps uplink instead of the 10Mbps.

So 2 questions here:

1. Would any of these 2 packages work for us?

2. Is there a need to upgrade from the 10Mbps to the 100Mbps uplink?

Thanks in advance to all who try and help icon_biggrin.gif

I believe NASCAR requires a video card in the server to run it.

I have run Nascar 2003 inside a RDP session before. They have a built in software render for servers... Its still graphical, but it doesn't show the race, just the hold screen and such.

Between the 2 I'd do the 3.2. If all of those get full at once your CPU may start chugging, in which case you'll need the extra horsepower.

So this setup is feasible? There are server admin. here that have run something similar with no issues? Don't wanna come off dense here, as we have run our servers for awhile this will be our first in running a dedicated box. Just want to make sure we have all we need.

The majority of our members are from the northern states and Canada and stretch to the lower southeast, with a few from Britain, very few west of the Mississippi River. The server we were running was housed in Chicago and we would like to get away from that. Anyone suggest another gateway besides Dallas that would have good ping times? Anyone dealt with St. Louis (not sure if Insomnia has St. Louis as an option)?
rabbit994
They don't, Dallas is your only option. If you want a different location, you will need to find a different provider.
Stormy
Aww ok, wasn't aware of that.....thank you. We could deal with Dallas possibly, so still interested.

Tell ya what though. You can't go wrong by dealing with I365. They have the BEST network, servers, techs, sales ppl...etc..

Also, what other dedicated server company has there own Klaude worker bee(not his real name).

Whatever you choose you can't go wrong if you get it from The Planet(I365).

After talking with quite a few of you within the IRC channel, we have pretty much solidified our thoughts as to going with I365 for our new home. Do want to take the time out to thank all of you....especially Violent Korn (IRC channel name), for your help and patience in the amount of questions we threw at you in the 3 hrs. of us talking....lol.

We do have one last question dealing with hardware specs this company runs for their servers. Could I request a breakdown of what type of ram is used, is this high CAS ram, what type of motherboard and is this 74 gig hard drive a WD Raptor at 10,000k? These are Dell servers right?
Shannon
errr, 15k rpm SCSI drives, and yes the majority Dell(Power edge 1800), not sure about the rest.
klaude
The SATA drives are raptors. We use all Dell servers right now, based off the SC400, SC420, 1600, or 1800 chassis dpeending on the server you get.

Good enough icon_biggrin.gif , thank you all for ur help.

I could provide all of that for you for less a month than you would be paying for you own box.
