One of the big drawbacks is the loss of root, voice, ftp, etc with a ranked box. For those of us with a single box it is a hard decision.

So I thought if two (or maybe more) clans/groups teamed up and rented 2 servers (one for the ranked, one for 'other') then their costs would stay the same, but they would have the best of both worlds. Altenatively both parties could keep their current box to themselves and just split the cost on a box for ranked servers.

If your going to do that why not just rent a ranked server from someone else?

I just PM'd you a few minutes ago. It's not a bad idea if it can be worked out. I think for us we're going to want to keep our ranked server mostly to ourselves because we want to run a 50 or 64 player server and that will eat up most of the bandwidth if it's full a lot. What we might be interested in though is keeping another box for clan matches, running mods, and TS. It's still up in the air really until we know exactly what the ranked cortext setup will be capable of.

Talkster5, a good reason for this is to know what's running on the box and have more control over it. If you rent from someone else you'll have no idea how many other intstances are running on the same box as yours. Those of us in communities/clans aren't in it for the money so we won't be overloading our boxes and making the games lag.

Our clan has sighed up for a new ranked server box we are looking to lease a 32 player server on that box we also would run another 32 player server on that box and are willing to give you a Private server on our other dedicated server for matches you can email me @ chewy6th@austin.rr.com or stop by our website @ www.6thad.com and pm chewy in the forum

Anyone looking at going for one of these offers, make sure you get in writing that your leased server has no limit on bandwidth.

Personally I think this is a bad idea all around. not saying anyone would, but they could choke your bandwith down on your server or get hit with a bandwidth overage if they attempt to run too many on it.

I have to go with Talkster on this one. Just approach a few larger dedicated server providers and ask them for a test server to check out. While it's no guarantee they won't overload the box, at least you know that they won't simply turn your game off mid-month due to bandwidth overages or simply because they lost interest in the game.

I am not looking to 'lease' from someone else but to share costs. So if you are willing to split the costs then that would be cool...but not if you want to make a profit

I wasn't pointing fingers saying people were trying to make a profit. But to share a server is a risky proposal. Many things could go wrong. The person you are sharing with may decide they don't have the money to do it any longer which if they were the owners of the server would leave you screwed, or if you owned it, you would get stuck with the full bill. Clans are touch and go, with members and leaders coming and going and members not paying dues. So just take a look at the risks and pitfalls before trying it just to save a couple bucks. It might be more of a hassel then the savings make up for

look dude, i dont know why you feel the need to comment on everything...I ahve thought this through and if others want to join in thats great...I am already talking to 3 dif people about this and think its a good idea. I have done things like this in the past with other clans and it can work if everyone comes into it with an open mind and are flexible and trustworthy.

if you dont want to do it fine...but dont start running scare tactics on people...we are all adult admins here who know what we are doing

Someones gonna hog the bandwidth or the CPU then its gonna be a fight then it all ends in tragedy

look guys I know you like to feel superior...but this is a simple deal for a 50/50 split. if it works cool everyone wins and saves money, if things go bad it can be ended easilly an no major loss


feel free to carp from the sidelines, not everyone is so loaded so they can run tons of servers on their own...some of us have to work within our means and do what we can within the limitiations
