I have a colocated server with my main website on the box, and the Name server NS1, NS2 are on the same box also.
(I know there was really no point in having NS2 on the same box)

My Question is this..

I have to change all the IPS on this web server because I am moving it. This means my NS1 IP address will change also.

I really don't think I understand the purpose of nameservers too well but what would be the best way for me to transition to a new IP for my website box without waiting up to 72 hours for me to enter in a new NS on the box and it start to resolve ?

I have another machine I can create an NS3 now to point to the current website IP.
Should I do that first so at least one nameserver will be active during the transition, then just change the host record on the other box with NS3 pointing to the new website IP when I have it ?

What will happen to the remaining NS1 and NS2 I have at dostster for this domain that will be invalid during the transition until I add new IPs for them ?
Will NS3 just pick it up and resolve the site until NS1 and NS2 update the records at doster ?

I think there is up to 72 hours when you change a NS on doster for it to start resolving the new NS IP.

I hope someone can clue me in as to the most seamless transition I could go through since the website is a business site.

Thanks for any help icon_rolleyes.gif

I may be wrong but you could set up ns1 and ns2 on your new machine and replicate all the entries in there. Once you are done with that, you can go to your domain name registrar and update the IPs for the ns1 and ns2. Keep both machine active until the ns1/ns2 IPs have been updated.

Once you get that thing settled usually 48 hours, you can work on the changing of the IPs for the site while keeping the ns1/ns2 entries. You shouldn't feel any real downtime during the transition.

Just make sure that everything is working prior to the change over.
