Full Version: Should i adjust my MTU settings

I get slow dl speeds for being on such a fast connection. Can anyone tell me if they adjusted their MTU settings. If you did what size did you set yours for and did it improve speeds?
eddy2099
Check to see that your network port in Windows is set to auto-negotiate mode and not fix on a specific bandwidth.

I have not tweaked any MTU on the server as yet.

Don't mean to sound dumb but can you tell me where to check this? I looked in the nic properties and didnt see anything about this.

Right-Mouse click on your 'Local Area Connection' and select 'Properties'.

Click on 'Configure' and go to the 'Advance' tab. You should see under Properties a 'Link Speed and Duplex' . Make sure it is set to 'Auto Detect'.

By the way, what are you getting as your download and upload speed ?
tkATX
Yea I saw that when looking through the options it is on Auto Detect. As for my speed it depends on where i dl from. People say i shouldn't go by what dsl reports says but i can't help it i have to look

Your download speed : 3707912 bps, or 3621 kbps.
A 452.6 KB/sec transfer rate.
Your upload speed : 1156626 bps, or 1129 kbps

This seems kinda sucky but who knows.

Thanks for the help eddie,

Matt

Eddie also while your in here when i right click on the c: drive it says that its shared. Should i turn this off? It wont affect my cleints will it?

Thanks,

Matt

No it won't. I would check with Network group before touching your MTU settings unless you want to end up with a box dead in the water.
tkATX
I figured I'd just leave it alone. Thanks rabbit do you know whether my c: drive should be shared or not? I'm thinking this is a security risk so I would like to turn if off but not sure if it will mess with anything on my server.

Thanks,

Matt

Best to keep all sharing uncheck for security reasons.

Unless you running helm, you can safely turn it off.
tkATX
No helm thanks guys

Disk Access speed probably might play a small part in this whole exercise so maybe a regular backup might help things up.

The DSL Report is one thing but it can be bias depending on where the server is located. How you do actually find your own server speed ? I know it can test download speeds but what is used as the benchmark for upload speeds ? I mean how does it upload to your server when it does not have access to it ? It could just be interpolated figures which might have been manipulate to show others in a bad light.
tkATX
Good question on the upload. I have no idea.
