OK. This is my first try at installing APF 0.9.4 and I need lots of help. It installed nicely...but then....I tried to restart. Here's my dilemma:
# service apf restart
/etc/init.d/apf: line 236: aquota.user: command not found
/etc/init.d/apf: line 236: aquota.user: command not found
Stopping APF:[ OK ]
/etc/init.d/apf: line 236: aquota.user: command not found
Starting APF:/usr/local/sbin/apf: line 236: aquota.user: command not found
/etc/apf/vnet/vnetgen: line 236: aquota.user: command not found
/etc/apf/firewall: line 236: aquota.user: command not found
Development mode enabled!; firewall will flush every 5 minutes.
/etc/apf/firewall: line 236: aquota.user: command not found
[ OK ]
What does all this mean? Anyone?

Not sure if this helps, but none of the above files in my system has line 236.

Now I am wondering what's going on even more. Hmmmm??

I opened the apf.conf file again and added ports per a few recipes I have. Then I ran apf as directed before setting the DEVM parameter to 0
DEVM="0" Here's what I get now:
root@host [/etc/apf]# ./apf --start
./apf: line 237: ad: command not found
/etc/apf/vnet/vnetgen: line 237: ad: command not found
/etc/apf/firewall: line 237: ad: command not found
Development mode enabled!; firewall will flush every 5 minutes.
/etc/apf/firewall: line 237: ad: command not found
root@host [/etc/apf]#
What is line 237 and the ad command? Is it me or theplanet (or the new version of APF? (Don't answer that)

I have it working fine on my server...
do you have Anti-DOS installed and working properly? That's probably the ad mentioned.

You should probobly just reinstall it and see what happens.

I appreciate your help., I enabled anti-dos in the apf.conf and ran it again:
root@host [/etc/apf]# /usr/local/sbin/apf -s
/usr/local/sbin/apf: line 237: ad: command not found
/etc/apf/vnet/vnetgen: line 237: exim_deny.lock: command not found
/etc/apf/firewall: line 237: exim_deny.lock: command not found
Development mode enabled!; firewall will flush every 5 minutes.
/etc/apf/firewall: line 237: exim_deny.lock: command not found
Apparently, I am missing a critical step. I thought enabling it by typing a 1 instead of 0 would take care of it. Judging from the above, that did nothing. What am I missing here?
ecim_deny:lock: command not found doesn't look real positive either. No. I have yet to reinstall but will if this keeps up. I know I installed it correctly the first time though
Looking forward to whtever else you can offer.
Thanks!!

I have no doubt you installed it correctly, but I have seen corrupt installs in the past. Save whatever settings you have and when you reinstall, copy over the portions needed (don't overwrite the old files as that is what would fail anyway).

Thanks again...
I ran wget for the APF tar file again, and untarred it. Before I run sh ./install, I will delete what I need to per your advice.
Right now I have these directories:
/usr/src/apf-0.9.4-7 and
/etc/apf
As you said, I need to delete /etc/apf. Are there any other associated directories I need to delete as well? Or maybe I can simply write over those without a problem?
FYI, here are the contents of the new install at /usr/src/apf-0.9.4-7:
[/usr/src/apf-0.9.4-7]# ls
./ ../ apf.init* CHANGELOG COPYING.GPL cron.daily files/ install.sh* logrotate.d.apf README README.antidos
Here are the contents of /etc/apf:
[/etc/apf]# ls
./ allow_hosts.rules apf-current.tar.gz deny_hosts.rules extras/ firewall.bak* main.rules VERSION
../ apf* bt.rules doc/ firewall* internals/ preroute.rules vnet/
ad/ apf-0.9.4-7/ conf.apf ds_hosts.rules log.rules sysctl.rules
What do you think?

When you install it again, it overwrites the old files, so deleting should not be necesary.

Problem solved. I just reinstalled it. Then I installed BFD. So far, no problems. Now all I need to know is how to work it without feeling like a moron.
