if anyone that ordered a virtuozzo server is willing to give me a week or so free trial on an underused server I would be very happy and in debt. I need to try to install my app before actually getting a server with virtuozzo.

I did not mean the server itself just a VPS in the server. I tried one for a few hours but was not able to get YUM or APT-get to work. IF you tried virtuozzo and know how to get these to work without breaking the VPS tell me , otherwise someone has to find out and make everyone with a virtouzzo vps happy.

BTW I provide shared hosting and give my customers 1 month free to try the service.

PS
virtouzzo seems nice, my other problem with it other than YUM is that virtouzzo is basically a modified linux kernel with management tools. The modifications of the kernel have to be released by swsoft as opensource according to the linux licence and they did not. Hshpere has a competing product and they released the kernel modifications and some managment routines even to opensource for free.
This closed loop makes virtouzzo inaccessible, no trial, nothing, since they are protecting thier most probably illegal status to a good product.
If virtouzzo was more accessible it would be more accepted in the opensource world of linux.

The GPL doesn't say that you have to provide a product or the source to a product for free.

If SWSoft provides the kernel source to people who pay for the product, they're perfectly within their rights.

its actually a good product to have , i just use it for what its worth. i agree the kernal mods should be available to the public and im sure they make it available to certain people. its pretty stable at the moment .

but free vps i dont see coming anytime soon .. the going rate for a vps is 39.00 and up without a trial. this is different then shared hosting . there are some license involved for each vps for certain software solutions etc. then on top of that -- it takes time to maintain it

I've hypothesized that it'd be ideal for game servers. With very little performance loss over native, it would simply serve to prevent one game server from eating up the resources of others on a box during a map change or other high-load event.

However, I am not sure how good Virtuozzo's resource management is. I know that Xen's is extremely good, while providing performance as good as or better than Virtuozzo, but Xen isn't as mature a solution.

Personally I wish they'd get past licencing issues and release the version of Windows XP that they had Microsoft Research port for them. That's right, Windows XP running under Linux at (near) NATIVE speed as if Windows was running on the box itself. Essentially running two OS on a box at native performance at the same time. It'd have a huge impact on server hosting. But alas, they can't agree on licencing or something.

You can pay 10.00 and get one at rapidvps.com if you are just looking to learn its worth the 10.00 cant do much unless ya gonna host ts2 servers or something.

If you want to play around with Virtuozzo and VPS, then you should just install openVZ on machine. openVZ is basically the same thing as Virtuozzo.

Installing YUM on a VPS depends on the OS the VPS is based on.
