Full Version: No Mail Getting Through!
The Planet Forums > System Administration > Mail Hosting

Mail doesn't seem to be reaching my server. No mail is filtered to any of my accounts, the queue is empty (in WHM) and the MX records and everything else appears to be correct, but mail that I send to my SM box never seems to reach it (but it doesn't generate a bounce message either) and mail sent from my SM box never reaches outside recipients.

I've had this problem off and on maybe once every two to three months, but it usually resolves itself in a couple of hours when all of a sudden I'd get all of the mail volume I would normally get all at once (i.e. check my mail - nothing - check it again five minutes later, 4,800 messages).

But now it's been about nine hours and none of my accounts are getting mail.

I put a ticket in with The Planet a few hours ago but they haven't responded to me since then, and when I called they just told me to submit a ticket.

I noticed someone else had this same problem a little while ago, but they didn't post how it was resolved:

I haven't changed anything on the server in a few days, and it worked up until about 4AM this morning.

RedHat 9, Cpanel 9, WHM, etc.

Run your domains through DNSreport, make sure there isn't some screwy MX records.

Tried that - everything looks right.

It was all working fine up until 4AM - I didn't change anything, but now all of a sudden NOTHING for nearly 12 hours now.

The Planet has been working on my ticket, although I don't know what the status is.

That's when cPanel 'does its thang', do you have cPanel set for automatic updates?
jough
Yep. And looking at the logs it seems to have stopped due to high server load.

I re-ran upcp and it finished, but it didn't solve my problem.

No response from Server Matrix for the past five hours, so I uninstalled MailScanner, and re-installed Exim with the latest ClamAV and now I can get new mail, send, etc.

I'm stuck as to how to get the old mail from the MailScanner queue, though.

Any suggestions?

Check your logs and simultaneously send an email from an account on that server to an outside source and send one from an outside source to an account on that server.

tail -f /var/log/exim_mainlog
or
tail -n 50 -f /var/log/exim_mainlog
(where -n 50 is the number of lines you wish to view at the end of the log and -f tells it to keep watching live while you test sending emails)

other logs to note:
/var/log/exim_rejectlog
/var/log/exim_paniclog

Just curious, but were you using ClamAV with MailScanner and then did you install the ClamAVconnector with WHM?
jough
I did all of that.

I got it fixed by re-installing exim and clamav. I used a script I found to remove Mail Scanner and re-setup exim and it's working like a charm now.

I never did install the WHM clam connector. In fact, I don't see it in the latest stable. So maybe they removed the feature or hid it somewhere.

Anyway, I have no idea what happened, but Mail Scanner choked somehow and just never relayed any mail.

I'm starting to see mail from yesterday morning coming in now. So hopefully it's just a matter of time before it cleans out the queue.

Here's the script I used, btw (although I have some additional exim changes that I did after it was done):

I was kind of freaking out earlier because everything LOOKED right. I checked the logs - the server was receiving mail. I checked the spooler, the exim configuration, cPanel, etc., and everything was just like it was.

I do nightly backups so I rolled back a lot of configuration and still it didn't work. It's a mystery still.

And then Server Matrix was just NOT responding to me in even close to a timely way, to the point where if something comes up that I can't fix on my own it will be cheaper and easier to switch to a new web host than to wait for SM to get back to me or try to fumble with it myself.

Support was great when I was first setting up my box a little over a year ago, and since then I haven't had any problems really so I haven't submitted a ticket in awhile. I had no idea how far SM's service had declined until I started reading around other web hosting forums and found that numerous other customers were complaining of the same thing.

I hope it isn't a trend.
